I've had a postie just put the card through without knocking before. I was sat in the living room and saw him come to the door and put it through! Went to chase him but he'd gone by the time I got into the street.

What annoyed me even more once with a different postie was we got the red card through (we really were not in that time), and went to the sorting office to pick it up after we'd waited the right amount of time it said on the card. Only for the office to inform us that we would have to come back and get our letter tomorrow, as because that postie lived in a town in a different direction to the sorting office he would just take the undelivered items home with him and leave them in his van overnight instead of taking them back!

 if anything happened to that van/mail its an instant dismissal
    no defense at all

I was furious! Doesn't it technically count as stealing the post that he was taking it home?

if they dont see it then they dont have to do anything

TBH i have moved around and lived in all types of areas
the type where you just lock your door as soon as you get in,and up north where you struggle find the door keys on the odd occasions you need them
up north you just dont lock doors etc,if you are in a touristy bit then maybe in the high season you will but off season its can be more risky dodging the tumbleweed ;)

I lock mine as when we were kids someone walked into the porch of our house and nicked our bikes when we left the outer door unlocked for 2 minutes - hence the habit got very very ingrained from an early age.

Our posties left confidental test-marking packages (clearly marked as such) on the doorstep before when I was in the house because he couldn't be bothered to ring the doorbell... I complained about that one. Another used to just throw packages over a 7 foot wall into a shared yard - without thought for what was in there.

Firstly, with regard to leaving doors unlocked: I lived on what was percieved as a roughish council estate in west london when I was a boy (ooooh sound so old at 45!). We always locked the doors when out but the back door was always open when we were in. All my mates would pop round the back and let themselves in, as did I when visiting them. Mind you was 30+ years ago.
On the subject of posties, I have never had a problem. The regular guy we have now attempts to knock the door off its hinges if he has a parcel for me. Also have an arrangement with neighbours to take in deliveries for each other.

Not Royal Mail, but Parcel Force and bl***y customs!

Just had to go to the depot (7 miles away) to collect birthday present parcel from DS and GF in the US!

Because they'd put presents for the three of us in one box and a notional value of $100 VAT was charged and then a 'handling fee of £8 by parcel force! £19.73 in total!

I have to say I experienced this kind of service at my old address, but since I have moved to my current address (18 Months approx) we know our postman on a personal level. He is one of the friendliest and helpful posties I have ever known.

I am always tempted (one custardy might be able to answer) particularly during winter or the pouring rain, to offer him a fresh brew, but never sure if they are allowed a 5 minute breather, or whether a disposable cup of coffee or soup is allowed to be supped.

Of course he is one of those chaps who would be too polite to accept it I guess, most definately he will get a xmas card with a nice little xmas tip bonus within it every Year, just for the friendly chirpiness he offers along with the service.
