.........better to keep a spreadsheet file of all accounts..............

yes, you may be right, however one of the joys of being retired is NOT HAVING TO DO SPREADSHEETS any more - frankly I can't be bothered. I don't have to do anything more - it's all there. Up to them, they can do it or not. I won't care.

I worked with statistics and spreadsheets and every time I hear the words (now that I'm retired) I have a bad turn. ;)

But I'm still awaiting suggestions for why my dad had a gramophone motor. In case anyone's not clear, this was a wind-up gramophone ... and just the motor!
My brother has taken the opportunity to clear out some of Dad's shed while he's in hospital. (He never even ventures down the garden towards it these days!) Amongst the many neatly labelled jars and tins he found all of the pieces from an old electric fire they had years ago! No fire, just the 'bits' Why??? :)

So that when the next one goes wrong he has the parts to repair it.

I know you're right. But when there is no longer a 'next one', it gets worrying.

Mum still has a garage full of bits of wood. I'm sure they might be useful one day ... I've sworn DH to secrecy, when my parents moved to their present house, HIS father had some of my dad's bits of wood from the previous garage. Those are probably still in my FIL's shed, which I daren't even think about. That one will be DH's problem, but I will ban him from bringing anything back here without my permission!

Bits of wood are useful for making a log-pile for wildlife habitats. http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/animals/wildbritain/gardenwildlife/myspace/content.shtml?20

But spreadsheets can be just an easy way of compiling a list - you don't need to use any of the fancier facilities that no doubt you were expert in.

They are not that kind of bits of wood, ie logs and branches picked up on nature walks. They are off cuts / dismantled projects / 'useful' bits left over. Treated / painted / varnished, some with nails sticking out.

DH is clearing the garage at this very moment! Hooray! Alleluia!

I have just put some CDs on Music Magpie and earned £7.77!

DH was a bit embarrassed when DD wanted stuff from the loft and I asked about an ancient suitcase.

"Oh, that's our honeymoon case!" said he!

    Out it went!

I've got some off-cuts in my log-pile, nicked from a skip.

Well, the wildlife in Mum's garden is going to have to get on without the bits from her garage. There's enough clutter around her garden without adding a logpile reinforced by discards from the garage.
