No question is stupid..how would you know if you've never done it or seen it before.
Bless you for being kind.
Potatoes grow on stems under soil..and these get longer as you earth up and you get more potatoes. So stop when your mounds are so steep earth won't pile any higher or you have no more earth/space.
Oh lol...I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't realise that was the reason why they got earthed up.
Thank you.Herman - MP for all!0 -
You are welcome.
None of TV garden programmes give reasons for doing such things..which bugs me..
It's easier to remember if you know the reason..well it is for me0 -

Horrible weather isn't it? I keep peering out of the kitchen window to check the none of my pots have blown over, or the plants snapped.
Hope your potatoes are okay.
I'm waiting on a boiler engineer. New boiler is leaking, so I've put an extra layer on rather than putting the heating on, which is what I'd normally do.
Oh, I went to Drumpellier on Sunday. It was nice, we walked round the loch and saw some of the gardens. I did manage to resist buying anything which is unusual! Mummy to an amazing little girl0 -
Tatties should recover as long as not major damage..if more wind is forecast and you are worried earth up to protect stems.
Away from home staying with my garden guru  so DH is on watering/fleecing duty0 -
Hello all
everything looks good in the garden today but that's because there is some sun again! Weird old weather here! I have just planted some new sitr fry greens so they are now peeking through which is good. Beans now starting to flower and netted up the strawbs and the gooseberries.
I also had a surprise today where I forgot I had planted what was effectively a twig in the ground and it turned out to be a passion fruit cutting from my brother in law's garden. Now I have a beautiful purple flower opening which is brilliantonly planted it in march and now it is climbing the arch. No wonder he said to me make sure you want it before you plant it. I looked and it has neatly tied itself in teeny knots over my roses just to cling on and grow- now that is an amazing plant!
Hope my rocket will be growing soon, I just love rocket and parma ham salads!Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790 -
Well the weather is pants as expected. I got the keys to my allotment on Saturday and other than Saturday the other days have ended in a washout. I am hoping to get some work done over the weekend though.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000

Hello peeps:D
Glad you had a nice day at Drumpellier GarnetLady, it is a lovely loch and the wood around it so nice.
Well my wee garden is all planted up with summer bedding, the carrots look so sweet with the feathery foliage and the potatoes coming on a treat.
have to say I heard a wee bit on gardeners question time about planting leeks ( yes the ones you would eat) and letting them just grow on as in a flowering plant for the foliage and huge impressive flower heads. I thought no way would it work until yesterday, I passed a very sheltered garden in Glasgow west end only to see the very thing growing and flowering in a garden, OMG it was impressive and the great thing is that leek grows so well in Scottish climes. Three guesses what I am going to do next.
I have a wee question to ask, are any of you noticing a huge increase in ants in the garden this year? Everyone here is complaining and putting it down to how long the snow and ice remained on the ground in Scotland last winter.
Anyhoos I am off, tomorrow sees me cutting the hedge and weeding, that is as long as it stays dry.

Hey Grebe! I have SO MANY ants! They are all in my compost bin
Oh well suppose they are moving stuff about in there! Think it must be the weather!
