Webworks Internet - anyone else had problems?

Little bit of background to my problem - a year ago I was telephoned by these people, Webworks Internet who were offering to design a website for my hubby's business for £100 and the website would last for a year. Sounded like a good idea so I gave the go ahead and £100 plus vat (didn't know this) was debited from my credit card. Heard nothing else so managed to find them on the internet and chased them up and eventually got a response that I needed to send them various things which I did on a form they sent me - also sent some photos (hubby is a Landscape Gardener) of some gardens he had done and one that had won a medal at the Tatton RHS Show. They then sent me a disc with the website on to approve and we said fine go ahead. We printed up a new set of business cards with the website address on and then we had a new baby and forgot all about it really. Subsequently we were advised by people who had tried to access the website that they couldn't which made us look unprofessional and I tried to ring them but they are very hard to contact and I am very busy with three small children so left messages which no-one returned and eventually gave up thinking I had fallen for a scam but too much hassle to try to get back my money - had no idea where to start anyway. Last week we got a letter from them saying that the renewal for our fantastic website was coming up and they were going to take another £117 from my credit card. I emailed them to tell them in no uncertain terms not to and also asked for my money back as the website didn't work. They have replied saying this is my fault as they asked us for details that we didn't supply "we have never received any information or pictures from you" but this is a complete fabrication as they sent me a disc to check for approval of a website that they had put together and I returned it straight away.

Really wondering if anyone else had any experience of this company as I am intending to take them to the small claims court. I work for a firm of solicitors and even though I am on maternity leave they are going to handle it for me free of charge so if there is anyone else out there who have been ripped off by these people we could sue them together if you wish.

    No - it should be:

    https://www.morrisandballlandscaping.co.uk

But it's just not there unfortunately. It was that sort of design though - 4 pages with some pictures and the last page had all the contact details on.

Anyone want any gardening done in Manchester - we are your people!!
  • Sorry to hear of your problems, I've just been contacted by Webworks Internet about their packages and in view of what you say will not be going ahead with them.

Its not much consolation for you, but your story has at least helped stop them getting my money.

I'm often contacted by people about advertising, the internet etc, as I'm self-employed and I always visit this forum before going ahead with anything. I find it very helpful and recommend everyone else does the same.

  • I think they have missed a l in the domain name, this address looks like it is your website:

Edit: Just noticed the date on the original post, whoops.

  • I have now been with webworks internet since 2007 and have never had any problems with this company, I initially purchased a website with them and once I was happy with the site and gave the go ahead I was contacted by a member of there team who asked if I wanted to pay a bit extra to be on google which I willingly paid, as I am a plumber most of my previous business came from word of mouth and adverts in local papers etc. after webworks carried out the work to get me on google I have found that it has generated more business than my adverts in the paper previously which in effect saved me over £300 in advertising in the yellow pages, since 2007 I have had no problems with webworks and there staff, they have always been helpful and are very quick to answer any technical questions I have and also make changes to my website as times move on.

Or even 4 years ago from the original post. :D
  • I recently called them to transfer a domain name registered to my business.
We once had a website with them but we were not happy with it so we found alternative providers.
The domain name for our business although still registered to us is controlled by webworks.
I called webworks as I wanted the domain name back for a new website I am currently building. They charged me £75.00 and I used my personal credit card to pay for it.
I later did some research and realised that I did not really need the old domain name. I called them to cancel the transaction and cited Distance Selling Regulations - but they reckon that I have made a biding oral contract because I made the purchase on behalf of our business and that they are keeping the seventy five pounds and holding onto the domain name until I find a new company to host the domain.
I don't know if they are within their rights to do this ... but I want nothing more to do with them at all unless I can get my money back or get my domain.
    :(
Does anyone know anything about transferring domain names, because I could use some help on that too?

So in response to other issues about owning domain names, they own management rights to the domain name even if your name is on the WHOIS register - they can and will charge you about £100.00 to get it back - and it is quite a complex process.
They are a nasty money grasping company - and I'd be ashamed to treat my customers this way ..... stay well away ... that's my advice!

My web site was purchased 2010 from webworksinternet based in Darlington. I had initially planned on just trying this company out but found the website did not generate any real interest for my business and was quite expensive in retrospect compared to other web designers and host providers. Despite telling the company twice over the phone that i did not want to renew the website they went ahead and charged my credit card (which they had on file) for another years usage of a web site i did not want. Having contacted my credit card company I am now endeavouring to get my money back from this company. I appear to be not the only one who has had bad dealings with this company based on other reviews i have read on the internet. My advice would be to give this company a miss.
  • I run a small firm in Bridgend, I have a website and was approached by this company to make my site appear on the first page of searches done by search engines, in particular Google. I paid with visa credit card. they made various excuses and then said that My site was not good enough and sold me a new site, I paid with visa credit card in December, still haven't had website. They have taken my money and are now refusing to answer my e-mails. what can I do? I have written to Visa, Halifax (card Supplier) and local trading standards. when I Googled them I found all the bad reports about them, not just here but in BView
