I would like to nominate the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).
The BDMLR has people (voluteers) on standby all around the coast of the UK who are able to respond to marine animals in need such as seals, dolphins. porpoises etc.
https://www.bdmlr.org.uk
It was the BDMLR who responded to the stranded whale in the Thames.
They do a wonderful job and are extremely skilled in rescue techniques.
Please support them.0 -
My, I don't envy anyone having to make a choice to narrow to 12!
I would like to nominate Oxfam for overseas. They really do make a difference to individual peoples lives, human beings that live in such povety that we can only have nightmares about. People who do not have the support and help from websites and forums such as this. Parts of the world do not have even the most basic healthcare and they die in hovels without even a diagnosis. How lucky I am, debt and all.
Samaritons for the UK, first hand experience, they really help and really are there 24 hours a day, just to listen.
Fantastic that moneysavingexpert donates at all and asks for our thoughts.Ciggie free 2am 21/09/06. Debt free 25/06/09.'It was such a lovely day I thought 'it's a pity to get up'' W. Somerset Maugham.0 -
I would like to nominate CMT who provide funding for research and provide muich needed support for familes.
My daughter suffers from CMT which was only recently dignosed. Its a genetic discease which has profound impact on her well being, movements and she is also prone to the cold.
Despite my daughter being 15 we are still in deny of her problems and dread next month when she has to have a hip operation due to the way she walks.
I no there are so many deserving charities out there, hell I help one out with my free time, but please spare a thought for those lsmall charities who rarely get a mention in the news whos impact is so vital for those who may benefit.

I'd like to nominate the international housing charity Habitat for Humanity Great Britain (Registered Charity No. 1043641)
https://www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk
Do you know that this morning two thirds of the world will wake up in sub-standard housing? Many in appalling poverty.
Since 1976 Habitat for Humanity has worked in partnership with people in need in 92 countries around the world (including the UK) to build simple, decent homes.
Those benefiting from a Habitat for Humanity home must dedicate a minimum of 500 hours labour and pay a small monthly repayment into their local Habitat group - this payment goes into building more homes in the community.
To date Habitat has built over 200,000 homes and helped over a million people out of dire poverty and into basic, safe and permanent housing whilst ensuring the recipient learns new skills and maintains their dignity through building with us.
That's got to be worth consideration hasn't it?0 -

I would also like to nominate national debt line - there were of great assitance to me a few years ago0 -
I would like to nominate: World Medical Fund
A small British NGO working in rural Malawi targeting children.
They treat babies and children on 15 mobile clinics in remote areas where there is no health care, and provide antiretrovirals for HIV positive children who would otherwise die from AIDS. Last year they treated about 30,000 children. I recently volunteered with them for three months and their work is absolutely great - even in the short time I was there I saw how many lives they saved and for so little money. Most of the children were Malnourished and suffer from Malaria, Respiratory Infections and HIV/AIDS. Even a small amount would make a huge difference to the children out there.0 -
I'd like to monimate LifeSIGNS please.
LifeSIGNS are a fantastic charity working to raise awareness of the syndrome of Self-Injury. They provide support, information, training, and have a very friendly messageboard on their website. Self-injury has reached epidemic numbers now. I'd be happy to bet a weeks wages that each and every one of you reading this knows at least one person who self inujures, even though you may not be aware of it. Self injury takes many forms and can affect all age groups and both sexes. LifeSIGNS really is a lifeline for many people.
LifeSIGNS is run entirely by it's Directors and Members who all give their time for free.

As a long standing member of WSPA,the World Society for the Protection of Animals, and a very new member of this board!! I should very much like to nominate them for the wonderful work they do ,throughout the world. They help not just animals but the people as well in some of the poorest countries who rely on their animals to survive. They also go and mop up after wars, earthquakes, floods(no pun intended!)etc to save animals from further suffering the consequences of being abandoned.
I received details of their latest campaign this morning and it made me cry. They have launched Farmwatch,to try and improve the lives(and deaths) of the billions of animals who are kept in the most appalling conditions in some countries, just so we can enjoy a bit of meat.As a vegetarian of over 20 years,i am not advocating we all give up meat, just take a bit more care about what we buy,and how it is produced. For a few more pence we could make such a difference.
https://www.wspa.org.uk/ really do know how to change things for the better, they have had such success with so many campaigns but they need money to be able to do so.Please help.
Thanks

East Lancs into Employment helps disabled and vulnerable people to set up their own businesses
ELE is a non profit making charity that offers training, support and help free of charge to disabled people in East Lancashire to enable them to set up in self employment. They are trained in all aspects of running their own businesses and support continues as long as the client needs it.Training includes designing and running their own website, financial aspects, marketing their services or products and so on.Business survival rate under ELE's training is very high 80% surviving after 2 years and 60% surviving over 5 years. Disabled people find self employment a viable way of earning their living by working around their health difficulties and the range of busineses created varies from antiques restoration to chiropody.ELE has no government or core funding and each year has to raise 250,000 to continue this valuable work. Please support them0 -
Hi Martin
what you are doing is a great idea!
I would like to nominate The Stroke Association https://www.stroke.org.uk
They are a fantastic charity who have the huge aim of supporting stroke survivors and their families - I say huge because stroke affects 150,000 people in the UK! Its the UK's third biggest killer and yet two thirds of people who suffer a stroke survive. About half who do survive make a full recovery and the other half have to live with long-term disabilities - and all need support to get their lives back, whether it be to regain some independence or get back to work for example.
Stroke doesn't receive as much media attention or government funding as other diseases I think because of the myth that it is an old peoples disease and if you have a stroke there is nothing that can be done for you. And yet it can affect anyone at any age and if treated as a medical emergency, early treatment can save lives and bring about a better recovery.
Did you know that more than three times more women die from stroke than from breast cancer? So I think we need services and public awareness to be just as good about stroke as it is for breast cancer.
The Stroke Association provides services for patients and their families, funds much needed research into treatments and prevention and campaigns for better care for patients. The charity does some great work but it needs lots of support to turn the tide on stroke!
