I would like to nominate: COSMIC (Children of St Mary's Intensive Care)

    www.cosmiccharity.com

COSMIC is a registered charity that raises much needed funds to equip the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the Paediatric High Dependency Unit (PHDU) at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. The charity raises money by holding a number of events every year and by enlisting the support of families whose lives have been touched by the PICU. The Unit is renowned as a centre of excellence for the treatment of diseases such as meningitis, and receives desperately sick children from hospitals all over the Home Counties for treatment. A fully equipped Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) is just one of the projects that COSMIC has funded since its inception. This offers children too sick to be transported by conventional ambulance the chance to benefit from the care and expertise of St Mary’s PICU.

    Many thanks

I would like to nominate the De Paul Trust

    https://www.depaultrust.org

Reaches out to young people who have little or no hope

Relevant because these are people who need to learn life skills, including money skills and are also probably likely to get into debt through circumstance and ignorance. This isn’t a child’s charity. This picks up where most children’s charities leave off – right at the time in their lives when they really need a support network and, by definition, these people just don’t have one as they come from disadvantaged, abusive and otherwise less than ideal backgrounds. Working mainly in the UK & Ireland, they are also developing into Central and Eastern Europe. They aim to take people off the streets and provide employment and training opportunities. They also work with families in difficulty and with drug and alcohol abusers. They’re only small so the money is significant to them.

Sorry, that should be The Depaul Trust. I've tried to edit the post but for some reason it comes up error on the page and won't let me!
  • Rethink helps people affected by severe mental illness recover a better quality of life.
    https://www.rethink.org

Many people with severe mental illness have major financial worries which are not helped by bank charges and reluctance of authorities to give the correct benefits . Rethink does a great job in sticking up for peoples rights acting as an advocate and giving excellent practical advice, removing one of the stresses of dealing with a life changing illness. They really need your support to help more people.

I nominate Tommy's the baby charity who are committed to funding medical research and providing pregnancy information to help more mums and dads through a healthy pregnancy and birth.

    https://www.tommys.org

As many of us here on MSE are lucky enough to be parents and parents to be. Also peops are constantly looking for baby freebies.....let's give something back to those who maybe are not as fortunate as us!!!
I cannot support you enough in your nomination.

My husband and I are still suffering following the tragic stillbirth of our son Isaac in December 2002. Over the years since he died, we have been trying to rebuild our lives and in doing so have also been raising money for the charity Tommy’s.

As you will know Tommy's is a medical research charity determined to end the heartache caused by premature birth, miscarriage and stillbirth. By funding a national programme of medical research, education and information, they are determined to save tiny lives and give every parent the joy of a healthy baby.

Despite this important work, Tommy’s receive no Government funding, they raise money from corporate companies, individuals and the Lottery Fund.

Thanks for nominating Tommy's and I hope that MSE will choose them too.
  • Hi there

I would like to nominate Cystic Fibrosis as we recently found out my 10 yr old daughter has this. CF it is the UK's most common, life-threatening, inherited disease.

    www.cftrust.org.uk

Cystic Fibrosis affects over 7,500 people in the UK. It affects vital organs in the body, especially the lungs and digestive system, clogging them with sticky mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe and digest food. Each week five babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis. Each week three young lives are lost to Cystic Fibrosis. Average life expectancy for someone with CF is 31 years. The money raised will help towards finding a cure for CF and also help the serious symptoms and complications of the disease, which include infection, inflammation, malnutrition, liver failure and osteoporosis. It is vital for people with CF to remain as healthy as possible, both in the short term and to gain from the long-term benefits of a cure.

    Many thanks

  • Usable Websites

    https://www.usablewebsites.org

provide engaging, accessible websites to charities free of charge.

Usable Websites was formed in 2006 to help UK charities develop accessible and engaging online presences.

Usable Websites believe that there is scope for a drastic improvement in online communication for the vast majority of UK charities. We also believe that as these charities are helping others, we should help them. For this reason, we do not charge for our services.

We develop professional, engaging and most importantly, accessible websites for UK charities that can be easily updated and expanded by the charities themselves through an easy to use content management system.

At the moment, our staff are working in their spare time and we already have quite a substantial list of charities on our waiting list. This funding would pay for programming time to develop these websites and to develop websites for many other charities throughout the UK. (Including the MSE Charity Fund, if they wish!)

Nominations for this site's charities fund are now open.
Please carefully read the instructions before nominating
What is the MoneySavingExpert.com Charity Fund?

This is money donated by this site to charities nominated, short-listed and selected by site users.

This site has, what I call, a 'not driven by profits' ethical ethos which means, nothing is ever written unless it is genuinely believed to be the best way to help people save money.

Yet that doesn't mean it doesn't make money. The sheer scale of the site and near 1 million users a month, means there is cash, and I like to put as much as I can towards doing some good (after I've paid the MoneySaving team, expenses, and myself).

More info: 'How this site is Funded'
    More info:
    Previous years' charity funds
There are a number of changes this year

Over the years, the size of the fund has grown, over £100,000 might be donated this year (Oct to Oct) thus there's an opportunity to expand the remit.
    • Only a third of the money is going to the nominated charities. In the past all the money went to the charities. This year the MSE Charity Fund is being set up as a registered charity in its own right. A third of its money will be going to the five nominated charities.
    • New MSE Charity Fund Specific Projects Grants. The rest of the cash will be available to be distributed at four points during the year as specific grants to charities, indviduals or groups to help educate, inform and empower consumers in the field of money, debt and consumer info. The exact terms of this are still being hacked out, but hopefully you'll get the idea. More details when the charity launches (info will be linked to from the weekly email)
    What's the process?

    A. You nominate.

Any user of the site (which means anyone of course) can nominate a charity registered in the UK to receive the money. There are four charities to get money. One charity www.re-cycle.org is automatically selected as my pick. It's very small, has been part of the charity fund since the beginning and it relies on the cash - so I have decided to give it an automatic berth

    B. Selected site users do a short-list

Five of the site's most regular users (the volunteer board guides) will be asked to short-list 12 charities. The following are the criteria they will be asked to use when short listing.

    • Relevance: Charities which are relevant to both the subject base and usership of MoneySavingExpert.com will be given priority.
    • National and International: Roughly two thirds of the selection should be UK based charities and one third overseas/international.
    • Six larger and six smaller. To ensure some smaller charities where the money really makes a difference are included, there will be six large and small charities
    C. The Vote.

Nominations end on Saturday 26 August. After that there will be a site vote to select the charities. The top two big and two small charities will then each be given 20% of the total money available (ie a third of the entire fund). The winners will be announced in the weekly e-mail

    How to nominate a charity
I'm sorry only UK registered charities are acceptable

    i. Click Reply to this post. (If you're not registered on the forum, which is different to signing up to the email, you will have to do so. Of course it's totally free and your email is never used for anything else).

ii. IMPORTANT. Please Include in your nomination.
    a. The Official Name of the Charity
    b. The Website of the Charity
    c. A desciption of no more than 8 words of the charity
    d. One paragaph only (max 150 words) of why this charity should be supported.

If a charity has already been nominated, please do not do so again, you can show your support by clicking the 'thank you' button for that post. Also please, no other discussions in this thread, it is purely for nominating.

Whilst you may nominate as many charities as you choose, remember they will be shortlisted, so it makes life easier if you just nominate one.

    Martin

A final note. The more users of this site, the more money there is for the charity fund. The best way to get regular users is to recommend people join the distribution list of the free Money Tip. Please recommend it to everyone you know.
I would like to nominate Barnardos for the amazingly difficult work they do for disadvantaged children & families.

    http://www.barnardos.org.uk/

Barnardos vision is that the lives of all children should be free from poverty, abuse & discrimination. Their purpose is to help the most vulnerable children and young people to transfrom their lives and fulfil their potential.
Keep smiling it helps you live longer & people smile back!
  • I wish to nominate The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign; it is the only UK charity focusing on muscular dystrophy (MD) and related muscle diseases. It has pioneered the search for treatments and cures for 45 years and provides practical, medical and emotional support to those affected by the condition, and campaigns to increase Government research spending.

Muscular dystrophy affects both genders, all ethnic groups and age groups. Muscle wastage can cause blindness, the need to use a powered wheelchair (as people with MD often do not have the strength to propel themselves) and is all too often fatal.

    For more information visit: http://www.muscular-dystrophy.org/

Your support is much needed and will be greatly appreciated by the thousands of people affected by MD in the UK
