I think it suits the UK & US governments to have something to distract everyone - on the TV news, etc. - from Israel's actions in Lebanon. It gives Israel more time to do what they think they need to do.

It also serves to show people in the UK & US how 'those nasty Arabs' are still a threat, when we are all starting to be a bit more sympathetic to their being murdered in Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon by UK/US/Israeli soldiers/weapons.

We also have a Police force who are desperate - after some seemingly bungled operations - to be seen to be 'foiling' some major terrorist threats.

May seem to be a conspiracy theory, and I'm sure there is something in the stories of what those arrested were planning, but I'm just saying it would serve all the vested interests to bring any arrests forward and to exaggerate their importance.

That's a very interesting point! I never thought of that!

Myself and family are travelling from Newcastle Airport to the Canaries for a fortnight. I've been looking at loads of websites re hand luggage, but am still unclear about taking books etc on board, seeing though you can buy them all airside?
Kids would love to take their Nintendo Ds's as well as their mp3's - I guess this will be out of the question, but magazines? Also, I know it sounds daft, but do we get the see through carrier bags at the airport?
I'm checking with travel insurance if camcorders/stills camera etc will be covered if stored in the hold.
Just dont want to cause undue timewasting at the airport, so any advice glady accepted!

    Cheers,
    Hels

  • You can buy magazines etc at the Duty free once you've gone through security I believe and these are ok to take on the plane. I would probably take my own plastic bags just in case...the more preparation now the shorter (hopefully) any delays will be!!

It should be easier to board the planes now. You won't be held-up trying to get to your seat while some idiot tries to stuff an oversized bag into the overhead locker.

  • Anyone know if we are able to take wrist watches?

We are due to be flying on holiday to Portugal on Tuesday and hope things have settled a bit by then.

I'll speculate --- after months of surveillence I would think that none of them are cpmpletely innocent.

How many will be found guilty by a jury of woolley minded liberals is another matter.

Very true. I bet six months from now we will be paying out millions in compensation and to keep them all in four star hotels!
  • just got this from easy jet thought i'd pass it on incase anyone travelling

Subject : easyJet business as usual

Friday 11 AugustSaturday 12 August: easyJet business as usualeasyJet intends to operate a full flying programme on Saturday 12August 2006 as the situation at airports across the UK returns tonormal, albeit with increased security measures in place. However, passengers are advised to check in as early as possible -easyJet check-in desks are opening three hours prior to the scheduleddeparture time of the flight, and will close promptly 40 minutesprior. In our experience intensified security checks will lengthen thetime between check-in and boarding so we advise passengers to plan tocheck-in as early as possible.Passengers and cabin baggageThe following arrangements apply to all passengers starting theirjourney at a UK airport and to those transferring between flights at aUK airport. With immediate effect all cabin baggage must be processed as holdbaggage and carried in the hold of the aircraft. To minimise theinconvenience this may cause, we are temporarily increasing our holdbaggage allowance from 20kg to 25kg per person. All passengers will be hand searched, as well as their footwear andall of the items they are carrying will be x-ray screened.Passengers may take through the airport security search point, in asingle (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag, only the followingitems.Nothing may be carried in pockets:

    * pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (forexample money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags))

    ;* travel documents essential for the journey (for example passportsand travel tickets);

    * prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essentialfor the flight (eg, diabetic kit), except in liquid form unlessverified as authentic.

    * spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.

    * contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.

    * for those traveling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents ofeach bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitaryitems sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creamsand nappy disposal bags).

    * female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, ifunboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes).* tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs

    * keys (but no electrical key fobs)

Any additional information will be posted onhttp://easyJetmail.com/cgi-bin2/DM/y/eZSs0IEwwS0JBZ0uGa0Eb

Making a mother with a child in arms, prove that her baby's food is not in fact an explosive, tells me that this whole thing is terrorism ie. terrorism by our own government. They are out to scare us and make us more compliant.

Anyone who would believe that there is any realistic possibility that a mother would want to use her child to carry out a suicide attack is taking the whole thing too far and is not reacting to the reality of the situation as it is. The facts are that there is a tiny chance that there will be a bombing of a civilian airliner.

The inflated language of the Home Secretary and senior police officers are only carrying out the intentions of the terrorist. Terrorists don't actually need to do anything now except create rumours to achieve far more disruption and publicity to their cause than a bomb would do.

We serve their aims by overeacting to everything and showing, not how strong and sensible we are, but how weak and easily led we are.

Meanwhile look at what is happening and make your own decisions. Air travel is very safe and remains that way even after the latest debacle.

My main worry is that the guns of the police are pointing at the public in the airports - They are looking at you.
