Hm not really much of a bargain on the upgrade then I would say unless you need a flat panel anyway but I don't so I think I will probably go for the standard jobby myself.

they offered double the hard drive add 3.5 floppy and flat panel for an extra £115

    Working it out...

HDD = you could buy an *extra* 80Gb one for around £35-40
    Floppy = £5 or less

Take away the 17" CRT (worth around £60 - £65)

So doing the sums the TFT is costing you £135-£140.

Did they say whether it was a 15" TFT or a 17" one?

TBH though it looks like Dell are trying to make a spec that will appeal to buyers but won't be costing them so much (if anything at all).

I'm going to stick to the original spec if I ever get asked!
  • ive had no phone call as of yet but have had an email with attachments confirming my order, in which i have to sign and date and email it back to them, when they say sign, do they just me type your name out or what, sorry to sound stupid but confused me as surely you dont have to print it out and sign properly ?

I should imagine they want you to print it out and sign then fax it back to them.

A real business would have a fax wouldnt they ;)
All Dell'd up ;) several times over :)

He didn't specify 15 or 17" so I suspect 15 like you say not much of a deal considering you already hav ea 17" crt in the bargain you can always flog that off and buy your own flat panel on the £108 deal listed elsewhere in the forums, like I said I am sticking with the original deal as I feel if I accept the upgrade I actually downgrad my bargain condiderably.

The upgrade is only considerable if you are too lazy to source your own tft as the hd upgrade in itself is no biggy and who wants a floppy these days anyway.

    The options offered/pushed are:-

    15in TFT E153FP £80
Floppy £10 (not many folk going for these i was told!!)
    80Gb HD £15

you can however have any upgrades you like at "half" the usual price

so to answer the next question:-

the 17in E173FP is £110 extra but is out of stock, but you can order if you like but no delivery date.

couldnt think of anything else to ask..

  • Got phone call from Dell this afternoon confirming my order and also offering an upgrade to a 15" TFT monitor for extra £90 + VAT.
    Told them I wasn't intrested.
Delivery promised in about 6 days
Received e-mail confirmation later this afternoon.
    Looking good

Haven't heard anything back yet after replying to the email. I'll give them a call in the morning.
In the meantime anyone have any ideas as to the value of the upgrades? I reckon the £15 extra for an 80Mb hard disk is probably worth it, but will pass on the others - the Dell 15" TFT is too slow for games, and the floppy disk probably isn't worth having at £10.

I also intend to stick in a PCI graphics card and have just found the PNY Verto FX5200 128Mb card at Ebuyer for £50.37 delivered. Anyone got any better suggestions for a video card? (i.e. ATI Radeon 9200SE vx Nvidia FX5200 - which is the faster)
