Absolutely. Google Docs and Open Office are both free. But there is little to beat the power and functions of MS Office.
Also students need to be able to present projects that look and feel right on MS Office as that's what will be used by examiners.
Google and Open Docs, etc both work well enough for the average home user who require a simple word processor for letter writing or who wish to create simple data bases for home inventories, but unfortunately for students these free applications are not widely used by the academic establishments. Also, most people working on PC's at their firms are used to MS Office and therefore will feel more comfortable using a product they know.
At nearly £500 for the top versions of MS Office, the difference was just too much, but with this bargain they will be able to afford to use what is questionably the no.1 office product.
Ultimately, for the moneysavers out there, both google docs and open office are something they should explore because as stated they are free.

Nice point. Many people working for the largest employers should check with the IT department there to see if they are in the MSDN subscriber scheme which enables employees to obtain either ridiculously cheap or even free Microsoft products. Thanks for the reminder watchitm80

I purchased the Ultimate Steal Office Ultimate 2007, last year.

Can anyone please help with whether it would it be cheaper to just buy it again to qualify for the free upgrade or can i pay seperately for the upgrade and how much?

Hi. There is currently no facility to upgrade Microsoft Office products.
The Ultimate steal offer is now including the upgrade offer. Microsoft.com student discounts
So if you are still able to purchase a copy (i.e have an educational email address), then goto Ultimate Steal and buy a new qualifying copy
Otherwise, this will be the cheapest option
