Nice point. Many people working for the largest employers should check with the IT department there to see if they are in the MSDN subscriber scheme which enables employees to obtain either ridiculously cheap or even free Microsoft products. Thanks for the reminder watchitm80

Sort of a barely related question here -- my husband can download from MSDN (didn't see the office package, but they do have Windows 7). It's available to download only -- no disk. Is it possible to make your own disk from a download like this to reinstall the program if necessary? He drops or otherwises messes up his computer from time to time and everything has to be reinstalled. If he ever is employed elsewhere and is no longer eligible to download from the Uni site, it would be nice if he could re-install Windows 7 from his own disk.

What a wonderful place this is!! My laptop was finally giving up (had it 10 years so didn't owe me anything) and I found a new one at an amazing price with help from the sub £400 techie thread and now this fantastically informative thread has got me the new office (can't manage without my Word & Excel) with an upgrade to follow. Thank you so much bugeyed for starting this thread and for all the time and trouble you are taking to help those like me who need help. :T:T:T

    From the software4students website:

    Windows 7 digital download requirements

Due to technical requirements copies of Windows 7 purchased via digital download are required to be burnt to DVD for use. To install Windows 7 purchased via digital download please use the following guidelines
    1. Download the Microsoft_Windows_7 installer from your account once the product has been purchased
    2. Double click the installer
    3. This will download an ISO image of Windows 7 to your hard drive, please allow this download process to complete fully before proceeding
    4. Burn the image file downloaded to a DVD as an ISO image format
(please note that this my require additional DVD burner software)
    5. Your copy of Windows 7 is now ready to be installed from DVD

NHS workers can buy microsoft office for 8.95. see details on nhsdiscounts.co.uk you need an NHS email address and it is the most confusing system of getting links sent to your nhs email etc. BUt i eventually made it through the confusion and purchased it and a back up dvd for about £12 last month

Thanks! That's the one you pay for, right? I was curious about through the MSDN site where it is free. Guess if no one knows about making a disk of the downloads, if my hubby wants it he can ask the dept. at uni that administers the free software.

Also, I would advise against 'upgrading' a trial pro version in this instance for anyone else in case it affects the licensing date - causing problems with the free upgrade offer - unlikely but not worth having microsoft claiming it was installed prior to the offer period and refusing the free upgrade to 2010. Microsoft don't exactly have a reputation for fair play.
So, although you could normally do as suggested - if you already have everything installed - in this case I recommend an uninstall of the trial and install from the disk - just to be sure

If you already have a full version of Office 2007 installed, do you still need to uninstall it and install the version that comes with a free upgrade? If I understand what's been discussed already, I think that's what we have to do, but would hate to if it's not necessary.

Someone might confirm this, but M$ Office will usually discover an existing version of Office. It will give you an option to replace or retain the existing version.

I had 2003 and upgraded to 2007, but wanted to keep outlook 2003. This is how i did it.

I haven't got 1st hand experience of this situation though.

You have to make a disc from the download "for technical reasons". Therefore it is supplied as an iso (disc image) which you have to burn to disc, using something like Nero or Roxio media creator.
  • Hallo

Just to say when I installed Office Professional yesterday on daughter's laptop and my pc, I was given the option to replace so this is what I did. It all seemed to go very smoothly and everything loaded. Just need to double check that the trial office student version on the laptop has actually gone! (re Bugeyed's comments) and double check that the office 2003 has gone from the pc.

    Ok.
To clarify some of the questions.

As explained in this link http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/aa948864.aspx
The MSDN office product is downloaded as an ISO. About half way down the page they explain to you how to use the ISO file. Just burn a straight image backup of the actual ISO onto a DVD for future safe keeping or copy it onto a storage device. Then follow the instructions there to use the image to install office.

    To quote Software4students site

How do I get my copy of Office Pro Plus 2010 when it becomes available? All customer who purchase Office Standard 2007, Office Pro Plus 2007, and Office Enterprise 2007 between March 5th 2010 and September 30, 2010 from Software4Students will receive an e-mail notifying them of the availability of Office Pro Plus 2010 when it is released by Microsoft. You will then need to login to your Software4Students account where a unique product will be available to you giving you access to the Microsoft Office Pro Plus 2010 tech guarantee.

    Link : http://www.software4students.co.uk/TechGuarantee.aspx

The offer should remain valid just by changing the product key - ONLY do this is you have the same version already installed. I.E if you have student version installed, and have bought the professional version, do an upgrade or re-install because you will probably want the extra software included to be installed. When 2010 becomes available, as it states Software4students you will be sent an email giving you access to the free upgrade by logging into the software4students site.
Glad they have sorted that one out.
So it has simplified the whole process

Nice and simple, once purchased and activated with the key supplied it seems that the whole thing will be quite simple when the upgrade becomes available.

Thanks by the way for all the nice comments and to the contributions from fellow MSE's. :T
