Seriously - teenagers rarely talk to their parents about these things, I'm not surprised if the mum as no idea. I certainly never told my mum about the time I needed the MAP and I was 17. I was much more likely to tell my friends. But FYI I have a fantastic relationship with my mum, I just didnt want to talk about sex with her when I was younger.
I still do not expect my daughter to receive pressure from grown ups who should just be offering support and advice or keeping out of it.
To be fair though in this case - the young lady appeared to want to stick her head in the sand and take a chance (although OP states she clearly didn't want a child) due to the fact that she was too embarrased to seek help not due to the fact that she didn't want to take hormonal contraception.
OP suggests that they would have hoped for the best had she just kept out of it so this could have resulted in an unwanted pregnancy however slim the chance.
If it were my daughter and she was taking this irresponsible approach over contraceptive failure and would rather chance bringing an unwanted child in to this world just to save embarrassment or fear of feeling ill after taking MAP I would be annoyed and disappointed with her to say the very least0 -
You haven't mentioned whether your son's girlfriend is under 16 also - it might be advisable to remind him of the possible legal implications for himself - see http://www.beinggirl.co.uk/sexrel/ageofconsent.php0

Not sure how recent a change that is, as I know it used to be two.
Yes you're correct it is only one pill now. And it HAS to be taken on the premesis. All so I dont think it causes a "period" as such it just affects when your NMP WILL COME. it could come soon after or a bit later then expected. The only effect I got from the MAP was a daughter... :-)0 -
i never once pressured my sons girlfriend to take the MAP. sticking your head in the sand and hoping she is not pregnant when they are both taking exams is not an ideal situation. they both want to stay on and do A- levels and she is an A* student and my son not far behind her. they were both faffing about, and needed an adult to take charge. hoping for the best is not a decision, its madness.
i will not be approaching the girls mother, i've been told that if i do it will make things extremely hard for her, she is 16 and of legal age so i will leave it at that.
i have told my son and his girlfriend they can come to me anytime for advice and he seems to have got over his initial embarressment about talking to his mum about the subject.
thank you for the posters who supported my decision to "interfere" but i would do the same again, we don't need any more unwanted pregnancies in this world, its overpopulated as it is, and protecting my son is my first priority0 -
Am I the only person thinking that the OP has way too close a relationship with their son? And why do you know about how "regular" his gf is????0

what is wrong with having a close relationship with your children, i asked him about how regular his girlfriend was to get an idea of wether conception could take place. i dont know what you are insinuating but if you have children i feel sorry for them because you probably would be ignorant to their needs cos you would be worried the relationship was " way to close"
not a helpful comment at all0 -
The danger here is that even if they do get off with it this time...they may well have another "accident". When people say the condom failed, what they usually mean is..hey we got so carried away,we didnt use one. They rarely fail and if they do ,you are aware of it.
If these two are going to continue with their trysts, the girl needs to be using some form of contraception also.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
My ex and I used condoms until we were both tested for STDs. The condoms split on a regular basis, I think more so because we had to use non latex. I was on the pill, but also antibiotics and the condom split so I took the MAP. I got it from our local Primary care free of charge, and had no side effects at all. I don't trust condoms alone, I've had so many split!0

Julie03. Has your son's GF made any arrangements to get a more reliable form of contraception for herself?
I'm glad your son feels that he can discuss such personal issues with you. It's a shame his GF can't do the same with her own Mother. She really sounds like she could do with some guidance to prevent this occurring again.0 -
