Hello all - Sammy, I hate to do this to you - but I barged past you rudely in the list and had my bubba before you!

My very cute baby girl was born at 5.20pm on the 2nd. We had a very quick labour and a waterbirth. I had a couple of puffs of entonox, but it made me feel loopy, so it was basically pain relief free - not something I ever imagined I could do. We came out of hospital today, cos bubs (and me) had a few issues with BFing, it's sorted now, but she zonks out at the nipple, and needs to be tickled/ stroked to keep her awake.

    :T:T:T:T

    Congratulations to you all :D

  • Who was the lady having vbac? Does anyone know much about membrane sweeps? As I have been having a read and in some areas ladys who go for vbac are able to have a membrane sweep at 38 weeks, then every week until 2 weeks overdue if no labour?

Just wondered on your thoughts on this? I am desperate not to have a section, and if I go 12 days over they will induce me which means increased risks :/

So wondering whether to ask my midwife in 2 weeks if its possible to have a sweep at 38 weeks?

Congrats btw I am sorry I cannot remember your name x

They will try to encourage you to have a second secion without being induced.. they reckon it isn't safe.. but it is.. they just have control issues. The gel they use first is less safe.. if it causes problems it cannot be removed whereas the drip can be stopped almost instantly so is fine in most cases. The gel causes uterine contractions to start at the bottom which has shown an increased risk of the scar coming unzipped.. it isn't a huge risk.. but it is there. The drip works by stimulating the whole uterus so is much safer.

Sweeps are fine.. though many will try to get out of it saying you aren't ready/baby isn't ready/it isn't safe blah blah blah..

If they can just break your waters then hopefully labour would start on its own.. that is 'best' but then they whine about leaving you and infection etc..

I'd go for the sweep at 38 weeks.. and 39.. and 40.. then demand intervention.. probably... IF I ever manage to get past 35 weeks!! lol

  • Pigpen what happens if the midwife says no to a sweep at 38 weeks? How do you fight your corner? My DS was born at 37 weeks so I know its safe to deliver after then as classed as term.

Its like with homebirth if you tell you DEMAND it then they have to listen and do it as its what YOU WANT. Is the same said for things like intervention such as a membrane sweep? If I tell then I WANT a sweep at 38 weeks can they just say no and thats that? x

Mumof are you under a consultant i have been reading up and it would seem they are much more willing to give the sweeps at 38wks than maybe your midwife would be. If your feeling brave and a little flexible you can always do it DIY you can find step by step instructions on google.

  • xmas it was my consultant who gave me the 3 options.. I wont get to see him now til I am term +2 days :(
Was hoping if I asked my community midwife she could look into it or book me in at the hosp.
Not sure I would want to do it diy? for just incase I got an infection from lack of gloves or something lol. Or what if I broke my waters by mistake ha ha x

They can in reality say no.. but you can ask them to check if your cervix is looking like it might be sofening.. it is common to be 2cm dilated in the last few weeks if you have had other children in which case a sweep may be possible..

You can only ask really.. I am sure if you explain your reasons you may get a favourable response.. say you are aware it is less likely to be effective if it is 'too early' but you need to try because it is important to you to have a normal birth etc..

MY DD1 was born at 37 weeks as well.. and was fine.. but then mine that were born at 35 weeks were too.. before that they just needed a bit of help with feeding..

This monster is after making a bid for freedom already by the feel of it.. ratbagging baby!!

  • pigpen so if she says no I may aswell just take that? movement atm from baby is hurting alot.. its like his bum pokes out the top of bump.. but down there.. I am presuming its my cervix? but it really hurts like a stabbing pain. It feels like he is stabbing it with a knife! its not every time he moves but id say 50%.. and I have had about 50 braxton hicks today. some are getting really uncomfy :( x

    Morning everyone

no sammy yet this morning, hopefully something is happening for you x

    Congrats bexta xx

I sorted through all our baby clothes last night and I have one massive sack of plain sleepsuits and vests with about 2 outfits. 5 sacks of girls clothes and a couple of sacks of boys clothes. There was more girls stuff than I thought and I've sold so much but I'm sure I still have enough to clothe a little girl up to 5 years, then all DD clothes she has now. Not sure about a boy as DS was born in a heatwave so all the newborn is shorts and t-shirts or short dungarees. I've kept some of DD lovely coats as well and a snowsuit but ebayed all DS ones. I've also ebayed all the sleeping bags so need to get a couple of them.

We have everything to turn the cotbed back into a cot which is good cos I thought we had chucked it out when we moved. Found a sack of toys too, I know I sold loads of toys at the nearly new sales, they sell so well so glad there is some left, also gave loads to SIL so surprised there are any left. Not going to be getting so much this time, although alot came from friends and family at christmas and birthdays, they did have tons and it just made it harder to tidy up. Will hopefully be out more with this baby what school runs etc Will sort out a list of what I need today I think.

Right so we are no longer speaking now either then bexta! :p:D:D:D:D I'm just teasing congratulations chick and I hope you get a name for little miss soon. Cant wait to see some pictures of her. x

Merfe - sorry to disappoint but I am STILL here. I don't even know what else I can try to get her out!

I've tried all the given 'antidotes' to get her shifting but nothing - I think she is either a)too comfortable or b) being stubborn like her brother and father and refuses to be rushed.

Everything is ready and sorted for her I just need her here now. Am seeing the midwife tomorrow though and I'm sure she did mention a sweep but that was before she had to refer me to the consultant so I don't know quite what is happening with that now. Also have to see the consultant on Thursday to discuss induction - had that with Ben so Oh the joys! although I did find out that the hospital I will now be in does allow the dads to stay for the duration of it whereas the last hospital I was in made Owen leave at 8pm and didn't induce me until 10pm so that was a relief.

More labour vibes though please - am going to spend today doing plenty of housework - left house yesterday as Ben was under the weather and between Owen, Josh, Ben, Me and the dog it only takes one missed day to look like a bombsite! Fingers crossed she might get a wriggle on then.
    Time to find me again
