OPINIONS PLEASE!!!
Baring in mind I have a week to go till my due date, no one to come with me, and have a phobia of having an allergic reaction so am stressed beyond belief.
I have to have IV iron therapy starting tomorrow. I'll be in a hospital 40 minutes from my home, need to be sat in the hospital for 8 hours for it to be administered over 3 different days (that means 8 hours tomorrow, 8 hours Monday, 8 hours Wednesday and due date is Thursday!) , have no one to come with me to keep me company/support me, its not going to benefit babe in any way, they are giving me 500mg intravenously whereas I'm already on 600mg oral iron supplements, and if an emergency/labouring woman/someone who thinks there is a problem with their bump - then they will take preference over me, ...........
To me it seems fairly pointless - I'm taking my iron tablets regularly - its not benefiting bump in any way, trying to find someone to have Ben was hard enough let alone have him overnight for 3 nights because if I start treatment and its uninterrupted at 2pm then I'm still not going to be finished until 10pm and even then I need to stay another half hour to be monitored and babe is 4/5ths engaged.
Dont know what to do............I want to do the best by baby bump but this isn't even benefiting her in any way. Plus I don't feel ill, have an appetite, no palpitations etc at all - have been slightly tired but put that down to being very nearly almost full term!
I don't need to tell you what I wouldn't do..
Have they checked serum ferritin? this is the iron STORE rather than the Hb count.. if this is within normal your blood will probably back to relatively normal a few days after the birth (mine took 9 days to go from 5.1 to 9 which is normal for me!)
If you are getting enough from your diet but your body is just wanting more nothing will make any difference anyway.
they couldn't get me in a hospital if they greased the doors and dragged me!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

I wouldn't bother either, but I'm with PP on the "hospitals make us even iller" (is iller even a word?) Of course, you must do what feels right for you and I know we're not supposed to offer medical advice but if I were you I would refuse whatever it is it sounds awful!Bellymonkey due 25/09/10 :j0 -
Sammy, I don't know that much about it but it does sound like more trouble than it's worth, particularly if you're getting so stressed about it.
Why not see how you feel about it in the morning and decide then?Updating soon...0 -
Like I said if it was for her benefit then I would do it in a heart beat but its not going to be helping her - just getting my levels up which they will be to a degree because I've been living on iron rich foods and vitamin c as well as iron supplements - ok only 2 days but better than nowt (don't get me started on the negligent doctor I have - he's known i was anaemic since April and didn't think to contact me! )
I have 1 week to go and to be honest I wouldn't sleep tonight through stressing about it and worrying I was going to have an allergic reaction so I'd end up having panic attacks half the day/night and into tomorrow which wont be good for babe plus 'd be exhausted.
PIGPEN - I'm the same with hospitals and have been anaemic on and off since I had Ben. My Hb is at 8 at the minute which isn't excessively low I don't think - others have told me theirs has been lower. Plus like I said I'm taking 3 x 200mg tablets at the minute but its impossible to get a store now whilst pregnant - after the birth is when I would benefit more from it.
BUDGETBLONDE - Something doesn't sound right to me either and to a few other mums down the school who I speak to - seems a lot of stress and hassle for something that's not going to really help much now. The midwife I spoke to on the labour ward said it would boost my levels enough but not dramatically but I'm sure she's employed to say that! Plus like I said I don't feel ill, other than feeling slightly more sleepy - wouldn't say excessively though but like I said I have a week left and Im full term.
Part of me is thinking to wait and talk to boyfriend when he gets in but I know he'll say well they wouldn't suggest it if it wasn't for the babies best interests but its not - its for my health but it wont do much until my blood starts to restore/renew itself anyway. Plus this amount of stress surely isn't helping her!
Think I will just stick to my iron rich diet, my iron pills and no caffeine/tanin etc.Time to find me again0 -

I don't understand why they don't just induce you! Unless that's not what you want? That would save them having to do the iron therapy, and you're going to be in the hospital anyway!Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

I think it would just be easier to induce Sammy too.. and would probably cost less in terms of resources and time management.. so is in the hospitals interest..LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0

Sammy- I'm with the others, I wouldn't bother either. You can take spatone or floradix (both more easily absorbed natural iron supplements) at the same time as taking the normal iron supplement which may help you afterwards, though I know Pigpen didn't get on with the spatone, I've found it brilliant, and boosted my energy and blood results really quickly.0

They don't see it like that though *rolly eye smiley* when I had the twins I was in for 4 days after my waters broke and nothing else happened, they only induced me after I threatened to walk out. I'd already had to arrange 4 days of relatives to have DD1, and I knew we weren't going to be released in a hurry after.
They could have induced me on the day after I went in, they would have saved on antibiotics, freed up a bed 3 days sooner, and I might not have had the anaestheist (sp?) who messed up my epidural and made me have to lie down for over three days :wall:Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

Hello
well went for my consultant appointment at 08.30 got seen at 09.25!!!! Consultant was really nice despite me refusing medical student in with me. C-section is booked for 26th August.
Had some bloods done whilst there as well as my midwife struggles with my dodgy veins.
had leucocytes in urine but they have been there for last month every test I have had so they have sent sample off.0 -
Sammy, it does sound like a rather pointless and stressful procedure. Like you say, if it was going to help your LO, you'd do it, but being so close to your due date, it's not going to help her, and very probably do nothing for you either. There's also the impact on your family as well, you'd probably wind up more stressed/ exhausted from trying to find someone to look after your little boy, plus late nights at the hospital, and still running your home.
Go on - be a rebel and tell them NO. It sounds like you'd be better off in so many ways without it!
