i worked in a fruiterers. it has always been common practice among some customers to take off stalk. we had one regular who would ask me to cut off the banana stalk too if it was long. i would never have told a customer no you have to pay for it because thats where we make profit. we couldn't afford to upset customers. we also used to half and quarter cabbages and melons etc. one hot day a group of cyclists came in and wanted some melon to cool down so we sectioned and deseeded it and gave it out in portions for them. we were a busy wee shop with regular customers. our manageress was good at using ''wastage '' though to make products for taste testing.
if i was spoken to in such an arrogant matter by a member of staff i would have walked and let him return all my shopping to the shelf. fact is , there are plenty of other supermarkets. tesco is not a monopoly -- yet!

It is Tiggywood, Laz123, Oopsadaisy, Kalaika who are bonkers. This is the stupidest thread of the month. The funniest thing is the OP actually chose to post this in the "Consumer Rights" section, not "Rants and Raves".
The reason for the policy is blindingly obvious. The fairness of the policy is blindingly obvious. Those who break stalks off (not the OP) are dirty, thieving low-life and should be thusly treated.
Apologies if you feel that I posted this in the wrong section, but as you can see I have 'L Plates', and people normally give 'learners' a bit of room
Just for the record...- The reason I posted it in 'consumer rights' was because I wanted to know if I was within my 'consumer rights' to insist that Tesco sell the stalkless broccoli to me, which they offered 'for sale' on their shelf. I now know that it's not my right and will therefore no longer lie on the floor in supermarkets in a tizzy screaming and shouting with my legs in the air, next time they refuse to sell me something!
- I did not break the stalk off the broccoli myself and I wasn't even aware it could be done with your hands, I usually use a knife and a chopping board, which I don't normally have with me in the supermarket. Although I don't have a problem with those that do break the stalks off as they are doing a favour to the people who prefer the stalks, so please don't call them 'thieves' as they are not actually stealing anything...haven't we all eaten a cherry or a grape to see if they are ripe?
By the way, dogs also like the stalks...
...sometimes I just wish there was a SPANK button for not very useful posts

And there are plenty of other customers! Tesco have enough customers to not have to follow the 'customer is always right' rule, because, quite frankly, customers seem to switch their brains off when entering supermarkets for some strange reason.
Also it makes me laugh when you mention boycotting tesco and shopping elsewhere. I have heard of people doing this because 'Tesco prices are too high' or 'the offers arent in stock' or 'we get told off for snapping broccoli stalks off' or whatever reason.
They then have to drive x amount of miles more to 'save money' and yet do they not realise they are pouring their 'profits' into the petrol tank?!Started DMP Oct 2011 - £7082Feb 2012 - £6562July 2012 - £6112Oct 2012 - £57810 -

I worked in a supermarket and it only used to annoy us when the customers hid the stalk somewhere on another shelf rather than just leaving it there.0 -
Exactly. I always take the stalk off because I don't like it, just as I would take manky grapes out of a packet so I don't have to pay for them. If there are that many people that like the stalk, then they can purchase my stalk seperately.

On that analysis, where do you draw the line? Deboning a chicken? Peeling a banana?0 -

I wouldn't equate it like that, banana would be the stalk on the top, the chicken well that's just a bit silly and will never happen. Though - when was the last time you picked up a chicken that wasn't in any kind of wrapping?
I think there doesn't need to be a line here, since it's probably been going on since time started and the profits thus will have remained the same (ignoring other market factors), the "line" here is based on the amount of people that don't actually bother to do it.
Maybe if Tesco et al. was bothered enough about it, they could break them off themselves, sell the tops separately for slightly more and sell the stalks for less.
After all, it's not our faults if we don't want stalks... the shop should strive to stock what we want to buy.
What if the stalk was 30cm long... I bet NO ONE would buy that one... :rotfl:
If *everyone* snapped the stalks off, maybe Tesco would do something about it properly.0
