    What a stupid comment.

It's sarcasm related to all the "this causes cancer" news articles, as per the links someone else linked to (also in jest).

    Hilarious subject to "jest" about.

No - I thought Frankie Boyle was funny?

I wouldn't have thought Frankie Boyle would endorse the de-stalking of broccoli either....

my mums family were market gardeners and one of their staple crops was brocoli - she is always moaning about the amount of stalk left on the stuff ... did not happen when they were cutting broccoli for market etc!! i state the stalk has the best flavour - she aggrees it is the best bit, but for composting to enrich the soil as it has more nutrients than the rest!!

anyway recently she has had a 'debate' with the produce department at our local sainsburys - and apparently they leave long stalks on broccoli "for the chinese customers" !!
Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"

Whine whine whine, I go around every day calling handcap kids retards and limping just to imitate disable people... no wait, I don't.

The subject isn't cancer, it's the - "this causes cancer" news articles (exactly as I said).

The joke has nothing to do with cancer and the affects of such - it is regarding the sensationalism of the smallest fact "OMG THIS FOOD CAUSES CANCER" that news outlets LOVE to broadcast.

This "X causes X" could be applied to many other subjects.

I suppose I cannot joke about the MMR fiasco?

You don't seem to be particularly funny at all, so perhaps keep the jokes for another forum and everyone is a winner.

I'm sorry - I will never mock news channels for stating obvious facts for the greater purpose, and I will always trust that what they say is gospel truth and cry myself to sleep when bovine flu grips the nation and eradicates us all.

Cauliflowers have stalks, but they don't sell them with those attached.

Sprouts come on a stick. They don't sell them like that normally.

Carrots come with leaves. No leaves unless you pay through the nose for organic ones.

    Tomatoes grow on branches. Ditto.

    Etc...

Is some people like the stalks so much, they can buy a bag full of them, as there will be plenty in the bottom of the veg crate in store.

This isn't the same at all, the stalk on broccoli is considered to be an edible part of the vegetable, and therefore it is perfectly right for it to be sold with some stalk on it.

If you just want the florets, then buy the more expensive prepacked trays of just florets.

It's the same as asparagus, you can buy the whole stalk or the more expensive asparagus tips in a tray.

You could buy the loose veg, or the preprepared, ready to go, no inedible bits included bags of veg.

Checkout operator sounds like a right jobsworth. I used to work in the produce department at the time when many items were weighed, you would see old people taking the leaves off white cabbages so they didnt need to pay for the full thing

He was probably being that was because the OP was throwing a tantrum in the store about a broccoli.
