Do Tesco always refuse to sell broccoli without the stalk on?!

Let's say YOU were running a market stall, and you bought stuff in at £x per kg. You sell at £x + a small profit per kg. But some of your more wacky and stupid customers decide they only want to pay for the "good bits" by breaking off and leaving the stalk, which noone else will buy. You'll end up with reduced profits or a loss due to the amount of unsold material left over at the end of each day because the price you were quoting per kg implicitly included the stalk, but some of your customers didn't realise that.
The only way to stop these stupid, not-in-the-know customers is to either refuse to sell the broccoli unless it has the stalk to deter the practice, or sell it for a fixed price so then it wouldn't matter if customers left the stalk or not.0 -
If they're that worried can't they just package them up individually? Cost more than loosing a few £ to chopped stalks? probably. Cheapest option for them is to not bag them up and then moan rather than "bare" the few people that drop the stalk (I doubt it's that many at all).
The way the market seller could deal with this is to sell just the top at a slightly higher £/kg and the stalk at a lower £/kg.
Maybe it's bad that people stand there picking the best looking veg out leaving the "worst" for others to possibly not buy?fluffnutter wrote: »Admittedly you may have created more waste, but according to Tesco, it was going to go in the bin anyway - even the fluffy bits!
More "waste" for Tesco, but less for yourself - if you are not going to eat it at least you give the chance for someone else too.
I wonder if Tesco would stop you buying JUST a stalk? Probably not...0 -
Right, sorry for taking this right off thread, but a couple of people have alluded to:
Eating Broccoli Stalk
Broccoli Stalk Soup
Can you expand? My o/h is addicted to Broccoli and most of the stalk goes into the compost. Didn't even realise you could eat it / use it in cooking. I want more details!I usually put them in the pan first then then stand the trees on top of them
if the skin is thin & fresh looking, they just need slicing/chopping, but if it's a bit tough & woody looking you'll need to peel them first.
there are some ideas (including soup I think) in THIS THREAD from the Old Style board

I don't use the green bit at the top of leeks, but I wouldn't snap that bit off and just expect to pay for the bit I like!!! or expect that someone would come along behind me and buy at full price the bit I've disregarded, that's nonsense.
same principle, it just means the price will go up for everyone because of those who are penny pinching tightwads!!!!0 -
Cauliflowers have stalks, but they don't sell them with those attached.
Sprouts come on a stick. They don't sell them like that normally.
Carrots come with leaves. No leaves unless you pay through the nose for organic ones.
Tomatoes grow on branches. Ditto.
Etc...
Is some people like the stalks so much, they can buy a bag full of them, as there will be plenty in the bottom of the veg crate in store.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

That's as maybe but all the things you have mentioned would be priced accordingly,
Tesco buy it in for x amount per kilo with stalk, so sell it on for x+y(profit) with the stalk on, what part of that are people finding so hard to grasp? if they sold it minus the stalk it would be more expensive per kilo!
MAN ALIVE!!!!
if you don't want to buy it as it's sold DONT!!!0 -
Can't believe there is even a debate about the legality and/or morality of this. Let alone how tight-fisted it is to hack around with produce before buying it.0

Everyone understands - but not everyone cares.
If it's really that much of a problem, they should buy them in without the stalks... just like they do with so many other products...0 -
Easy peasy solution. Snap off your stalk like you nornally do and then use the self service checkout.
It won't ask you where the stalk is!
It won't say "Unexpected stalkless-broccoli in bagging area."
It will just weigh it and charge you accordingly.0 -
