Do Tesco always refuse to sell broccoli without the stalk on?!

I like the stalk. Great in soups.0

I shop at Asda and always break off the stalk when the veg guys aren't looking. I object to paying for 2 - 3 inches of stuff I'll throw away. If they refused to sell it at checkout I'd leave it.0

Prepare yourself for accusations of being a [middle class] thief, just one step above shoplifting and drug-dealing.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why then you're as thick and stupid as the moderators on here - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Tesco price their stock as it is supplied. When people go in and snap bits off it to financially benefit it costs Tesco money in both lost revenue and also time to maintain cleanliness etc.
Tesco will have priced that product to sell as a whole. Now it sold as a part and the other part won't sell i.e a financial loss. Ok its one item but this all quickly adds up. What about if people start deciding they want a bottle of whisky and opening them and taking the inside then taking the remaining weight from another bottle? so they are not paying for a bottle and only whisky.....
Jobsworth or not I suspect he was spot on0 -

Do you object to pay for packaging and printing? And over zealous marketing? Because (specially with big name stuff) you are paying for the name/packaging.
Maybe you weigh all your veg without the bag because you refuse to pay for the part that you will throw away?
Go into your local Aldi and look for the imitation "mars bars"... exactly the same, half the price.0 -

Spot on, that's what I was getting at also0 -
TBH, I snap the stalk off my broccoli too. I've never even thought about doing it when the employees are not looking (I find there's rarely any employees around anyway...). If there's a broccoli head I'd like to buy I'll just chop the stalk off and be done with it. The shop is still able to sell that stalk to someone else who wants it (as others have already said they like the stalks).
To me, the analogies to bottles, packaging, etc on other goods don't work as you don't buy other items by weight where the packaging is included in that weight. E.g. if you bought, say, a kilo of pasta, you buy exactly that, a kilo of pasta. The packaging isn't included in that weight. No trees were killed to send this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. - Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson)0 -
it certainly is annoying Tesco being so picky, but I can see where they're coming from re the stalk-snappers, although the OP didn't actually do that ... but for goodness sake, throwing it away rather than selling it!!! (really miss the roll-eye smiley)
tbh, I prefer the stalks & fob off the trees on whoever else is eating with me
I have friends who eat very well (their cats get king prawns ) & they were intrigued to see me cooking stalks because they always bin them
anyway, they went home & tried them & are now stalk converts
perhaps Tesco should start a Stalk-Tastieness-Awareness-Raising campaign0 -

Packaging (the bag) is included in £/kg products though
(the comment was in jest anyway)

At last, a sane voice amongst all this madness.
Have all the cyber saints here had a look at Tesco's profits lately? (And yes, it is relevant). This retail virus are killing our town communities and riding roughshot over councils. If you don't believe have a look here http://www.tescopoly.org/
All your analogies are completely bonkers. You need to think first before spouting out your knee-jerks.
