Value of VW cars

They're a good car maker, but not special. I had a golf that the paint was awful on, rusted all over, and for a mid range car was as basic as anyone elses entry level.
They keep their value because of the way they are priced from new. List price included nothing extra, not even a radio, so by the time you've added on several hundred pounds or even thousands for the basics, depriciation looks quite good against list price of the basic car.

£3000 for a mid-nineties E36? Don't forget to also mention the 90% of those coupes that are £1500 or less.

Unless there's something very special about your car, it'll be in with the other examples. Oh and advertised prices rarely reflect sale prices.

Congratulations on using a search engine. The price depends of a number of factors, engine size, mileage, interior etc.

I paid 4.5K for mine and the cheapest one on the internet 18 months later is £5,000 but it has wayyyy higher mileage. But yea, its now suddenly going to plummet in value over the next 2 years...

My mum sold her R reg micra for £700 and 5 years later the same car is exactly the same price!!! Weird huh...

The e46 3 series will hold its value because its a prestige car that still looks great and its reasonably cheap to tax, insure and maintain.
  • Wow, so mileage is the sole factor in determining a vehicle's value? I must have missed that, I thought that overall condition was far more important. I wouldn't be surprised if the example you quote has been on the market for six months. I can pull out instances of W124 Mercedes which are priced at £10,000, and more instances where exactly the same car is priced at £1,000. Guess which are more realistically priced?

The E46 isn't a prestige car, it never was. They were as common as Ford Mondeos were. You go on kidding yourself though, it's funny to read.

Anyone know why VW's hold their value, is it down to the badge or the fact they are well built or something else,

    Their marketing is astonishingly effective.

They are reasonable, if rather expensive, cars whose reputation exceeds their ability.

Couldn't have summed it up better myself!

I just don't get VW! Over many years I've thought I must be wrong as so many people think so highly of them but on each occasion I've looked at and driven a new one I've been disappointed. Sure, they're well screwed together and have a solid Teutonic feel about them but are often utilitarian and not overly comfortable. Most recently I compared a top of the range Tiguan with a Honda CRV but by the time you'd added features that should be included at TOR level (climate control, cruise, parking sensors, leather etc) the VW was £3-4K dearer. On testing, to me the Honda was a better drive with a better reliability reputation, so no contest.

VW ads since the 70's and 80's though have been outstanding, even to todays "sounds like a Golf" ones. So I put it down to better spin than Nu Lab and the madness of crowds! ;)

I had a couple of Mk4 Golfs as company cars (German company, no choice) and while they were, as you say, competently screwed together they weren't in any way exceptional. I recently drove a current model Passat and thought it quite horrible.

In my opinion, I think the reason why VW and BMW etc hold their price is because they are known for their realiability

For sure, my VW parts cost an absolute fortune when things go wrong, but I've had it for nearly 2 years now, it had 147k when I bought it and has around 167k now and still going strong. Starts first time every time.

I've never had to buy any parts for it just the usual service

I think the reason why people pay the price for them is more down to the fact that they're happy to pay the prices because they know they can expect less problems

The only issue I have had with my Passat has been repairing the door locks and limp mode problem with the engine (because the turbo is clogged up)

Paid around £1500 for it, probably gonna sell for half that IF I get rid. I'm going to keep it until it dies basically and I won't hesistate to buy antoehr VW

Nissan Primeras are also VERY realiable imo (old models like GT and SE)
Owner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

    Working towards DFD

    HSBC Credit Card - £2700 / £7500
    AA Loans - (cleared £9700)
