Anyone know why VW's(or is it just 1 particular car from the VW range) hold their value, is it down to the badge or the fact they are well built or something else,

I dont think its the badge alone, golfs still look great and they are sturdy german cars.

Take my 3 series bmw for example, I bought it for 4.5K during the recession last year. Its an 02 plate coupe. It will still be worth 4K in 2 or 3 years time. (Some are listed on autotrader for 5/6k as we speak!).

Not many prestige cars will depreciate in value as little as that so it becomes a smart buy if you ask me.
  • look at the condition of an average r reg passat and take a drive in one, then look at a similarly used r reg vectra, mondeo, laguna or 406. obviously there will be exceptions but on the whole they age very well. the TDi diesel engines were far ahead of similarly aged competition in reliability, performance and economy too. A lot of buyers know this so they are sought after, driving prices up.

My last VW Golf was 18 years old when I sold it for £350 - the first person bought it, didnt even haggle, paid cash and drove off well happy.

This time Ive bought a brand new VW Golf Plus - using my OH's 23 year old BMW convertible for the scrappage deal :) - we are planning on this one probably lasting til our dotage now as we are 60 this year. We went to buy a standard Golf but when we tried the Plus we loved it even more, step straight in, no bending over :), lots more leg and arm room and plenty of space in the back for the mutts as the seats push forward.

Lovely cars, the body and paintwork still look good after decades - just look at the old VWs you see on the road.

My son just bought a year old Golf, he was dithering over getting a Honda Civic as it has good reviews but he said having tried both he felt the Golf would continue to be a classic, the Civic seemed to change from virtually one year to the next.

I think you also find that VW don't flood the market with loads of vehicles, I'm in a vw drivers forum, and i've been waiting for my new Golf Bluemotion for 6 weeks, and a possible another 4-6 weeks to go, some people have had gti's on order for the best part of six months, and this is all because they aren't pumping out several thousand vehicles into parking lots up and down the continent, like Ford/Vauxhall etc, I mean every dealer you go into there are several thousand of list price, with VW you're lucky to get a couple off, and thats for the best hagglers. But paying that mooney you are fairly secure in the knowledge that you're motor, if you look after it, will hold at least half of it's value after 3 years and average mileage.

glen, the scirocco is a beautiful car very nice indeed, can be quite costly, but on the vw forum i'm in it gets some cracking reviews from guys who have them. If I wasn't so mindset on being 'green' with getting a golf bluemotion, i'd have been seriously tempted with the scirocco, fell in love with it the minute I seen it when it launched.
Thanks to all the competition posters.

When I had a 10 year old VW Polo I got offers from mechanics whenever I got tyres exhaust parts, MOTs etc. I had no problem selling it for the asking price when it was 12 years old.

Yesterday, we saw a P reg Golf or Polo (can't remember exactly which). My husband commented on how surprised he was that it had passed an MOT - it was full of rust holes. I think we took more notice of it because of the fact it was a VW and it was in such a poor state. Definitely an exception, as most older ones i've seen have had pretty good bodywork.

Last hire car I had was a 1.2 VW Polo E - shockingly bad little thing. Terrible interior, horrible little 3 cylinder engine and absolutely nothing feature wise (manual windows, no A/C, etc)

But of course that was a hire car spec model which certainly doesn't hold it's value :rotfl:. Was built quite solidly so I can see why they're desireable in higher spec forms.

Currently have a Skoda Fabia as a courtesy car - same 1.2 engine as the Polo yet it outputs 70hp instead of 55. Nicer drive, lighter feeling more spacious cabin and it's loaded with toys. It is the '2' trim though, not a base model. Dealer is selling it later this month at 3 months old for £9500 - I don't know how much a 3 month old Polo of the same spec would be worth.
