isasmurf wrote:I hope you haven't done that. The £500 'free overdraft' means you don't pay a fee on having the facility to go overdrawn. You still have to pay interest on the amount you are overdrawn.
Quite right, however, last year that 'interest free' was available, apparently not now.
A similar deal is being offered by Cahoot. Subject to status, a £500 overdraft is available, of which £250 is 'interest free', I've just checked.
So, technically, as I see it, you could add that to your account and accrue interest on that.
MA common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Just been to look at the Lloyds TSB website re £50. Do they give you the £50 for opening an account to start off with or is it just recommends? Do you get the £50 if opening a new account then £50 for each recommendation. Can someone please post the link. Thanks.0

mmm Hemlock, only thing is they are asking for salary transfers, bill transfers etc. as part of the deal and as they are part of Abbey, with the trouble we have had claiming for fraudulent transactions in Spain, I wouldn't touch Abbey with a bargepole as it took 4 months to resolve compared to 6 weeks with other banking institutions!! It has taught me a lot about customer services and basically it doesn't exist within Abbey.0

Just looked at the First Direct website and doesn't seem like they are offering the £25 to open new accounts any more. May be wrong but ...0

Rang yesterday evening about 17.30 and spoke to a man who took my name, address etc and said he would send me out the details. I did quote the code but he told me I would have to send in the "coupon" that was in the paper along with the application form to get the £25.00 offer.0

I closed a joint account held with First Direct in October 2002. I rang up to take advantage of the £25 offer and was told that anyone that has held a FD current account at ANY time is inelligible for this offer:(0

I told the very nice man that I hadn't kept it as the article didn't say that you had to submit it (I was hoping it didn't!). He told me that the code had appeared on some internet boards (!) and they had been inundated with new applicants and that they were trying to keep the offer for genuine Times readers.
In the end, he agreed to send me the information pack and said it should be ok. I will be checking I'm going to get the cash before I apply though.0 -
Just called an very nice lady said that they are inundated on the phone so are sending out packs in the mail. Hard to argue with that really - see what I get in the post.0

I want asked to send in a coupon - I just quoted the code. I again confirmed the terms of the offer. The night before Martins's mail I was told it DOES apply online, but I decided to go with Martin's advice, he's usually right!
If first direct are inundated its only due to their naivety. Personally I'm just getting a little revenge on HSBC for refusing to open a savings account and generally being rude and uninformed. Just because I dress like a student, doesnt mean my finances are organised like one! Having said that, I need a spare debit card (in case of loss or theft of my day-to day one, and for internet stuff) and first direct do seem really nice to deal with. I think this account may be a keeper for me!
On the Lloydstsb issue - yes you get £50 for signing up for yourself, but get a friend to refer you and you each get £50. Go to their website-->personal customers-->current accounts and you cant miss the link at the top of the page
Its a good time to claw back a little money from the banks.......0 -
