LOL @ Sharra - I just soke to a really nice guy that made me think I should bank with them too! It did take a while and I felt almost guilty cos he was so nice - but then thats all part of the marketing ploy....

Let's say someone opens an account and pays in the £100 there and then. From past experience, can anyone give us an indication of how long it takes for the bonus to be credited?

Can the account be closed online or would be another call-centre job?

They must have changed it since I applied.

Opened in early January on T'internet, bonus paid in three weeks later, no salary paid in either! :)

Now I'm waiting for my wine for opening credit card account with them.

edit: not waiting any more, six lovely bottles. :)
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.

  • :mad Just tried the First Direct bank new account telephone line, went through all my details since i was a foetus and got turned down. There is absolutley nothing wrong with my credit score, is this just an information gathering service from them, as no doubt i will receive junk mail for the next 5 years.

1st message so I hope its ok!

    Seems to be!
I was sent info from First Direct offering me £35. As long as i put in £100 before end of march, salary doesnt have to be paid for this offer i have just checked. They did send a lot of literature re credit cards etc promptly.

This is obviously even better than in Martin's article! I presume the key to this offer is the application form which you have to return. How did you get the form (unsolicited or requested?), and does anyone know if a copy of the application form would be acceptable (assuming this isn't explicitly forbidden in the T&Cs), or if you're likely to be done for copyright infringment if you copy it (scan and email) for someone else?

  • I too got the £25 offer about 2 months ago but chose to ignore it.
Last week they sent another offer but this time saying that there was £35 up for grabs, can we tempt you ? This was just too good an opportunity to miss 2nd time round. The moral of this story is First Direct must be absolutely desperate to get customers - perhaps bide your time, you might be lucky(?) like me and get a bigger offer 2nd time round.

Ok I phoned last night, before I saw the money tips

I was assured by the (again very nice lady) that I spoke to that all I had to do was apply ONLINE and pay in £100. I was very clear I was going to do it online and I checked I would not have to pay in my salary, and I checked both these points twice

Again, they were so good I might actually like banking with them

    edit

having said that - she could have made a mistake, and the internet site is slow too

I think I will go with Martin's advice and try the phoneline later - its 0800 after all!
  • Hi,

called them, was given no option to apply on the phone but the callcentre bod immediately knew what I was talking about (£25 deal) and was very forthcoming about how it could be exploited!

She's sending the application form to me but did stress that there is no reference to the code on the forms. Apparently, during the telephone call she logs the promotional code with the address details you provide. Nonetheless assuming the smallprint looks OK I'll be sure to write on the promo code to the form regardless.

    Hi,
I joined when Martin first spotted this last year. Not only did I take advantage of the £25, but they were offering a £500 free overdraft, which I promptly put into an e-savings account they opened for me together with the £25.
So I have just left it there earning a little bit off interest with their money. Thank you very much!
I think that offer is still available too.

I was also declined and they said experian gave them an 'alert' so called experian who said the only thing wrong with my report is regarding a problem with barclaycard 5 years ago!! There are a few searches recently as well, but I said 1 decline means I try somewhere else, but this further complicates things. He said try and lay off the searches and try a few months later. Yeh like I didnt already know that, and if this stupid barclaycard didnt still count against me which was the result of forced redundancy, I would not have all the extra searches! Well great, now I have another one from first direct :(
