I know, there was this, too...
I was talking to a lady from First Direct today and casually mentioned the offer in the Times, and she said, their sales team had been totally snowed under. She said, (not an exact quote, but words to the effect of):

'Some idiot went on TV and said, Look, they're crazy, they're giving away £25 to everyone who signs up for an account.'

I said, "Ah, that would have been Martin Lewis, then." She said she thought it was. :D
And don't worry, if it happens again, I have plenty of spare knickers from the Figleaves £5 off + free delivery thread a while back! :D

I received the pack from FD a couple of days ago - I can't remember if I quoted the number or not - I think I did.
Is there anyway to tell or is there somewhere on the form to quote it?

Just write it on the form yourself and send it back!!

  • Just tried to get my £25, but in the course of converastion I confessed that I had previously held an account with First Direct that I closed last year. The guy I was talking to told me I wouldn't be eligible for the offer as a 'new' customer because the bank hold customer records on file for 7-8 years after closure! Consequently, I would still appear as one of their existing customers.

Spoke to my Dad to get his £25 and he was advised by FD to get me (already an FD customer) to ask for a 'member gets member' form. -very nice ;)

I phoned FD, they sent the forms. I fill in my postcode and name and post to my Dad and Mum and Sister. Now I get 3 x £25 and they get £25 each! :D

and IMHO FD is actually the best bank I've been with in 25 yrs of banking. :)

I joined 1st Direct thru a mail shot, got £35 by just putting in £100. Was very easy BUT, they have since sent me their 'recommend a friend' £25 quid for u £25 quid for your friend scheme. This is proving NOT so easy. The 1st friend I recommended was refused on account of a credit check?! (Not sure why you need a credit check to pay in £100 to a bank account!) My 2nd recommended friend has received numerous phone calls to 'check' his details and today received a letter requesting that he call 1st direct so they could 'check' some more details!!

It's turning out to be the most difficult £25 we ever earnt!!!

If you're applying for credit cards or current account banks would need to conduct a credit search because you could go in debt and run off. Whereas if it was an isa you can never be in debt therefore no banks need to do a credit check.
    Hope that makes sense
