Hi everyone! I've only posted once or twice on here so far but am now just about ready to start my DMP. Very very scared! I've got all the letters to my creditors ready to go, all the stuff to CCCS ready to go, and am posting it at lunchtime tomorrow. I've cancelled my DDs (gulp!) and will be making token payments this month.

I've got a couple of questions if anyone can help. I'm hoping to move in July of next year as my husband and I currently live in two tiny rooms in a house share as a married couple. We desperately need our own space for the sake of our relationship. I'm planning to save to pay for a lot of the move which is going well, and also I'm lucky to have a good job with the hope of a pay rise next month (please,please,please...). If I'm on a DMP, does anyone know how that would affect our chances of renting elsewhere if at all? My argument to any agency who questioned it on a credt check would be that I'm actually more stable than most as I live to a budget set using help from CCCS and have no access to credit meaning no way to get into debt. At that point I would hopefully also have savings to show that I have reserves if needed.

Second question is to do with my car insurance. I've always paid it all upfront at the beginning of the year but this year am going to do it on DD. I'm staying with the same company but would there potentially be a problem with me getting a DD set up? I wouldn't be able to afford upfront car insurance this year looking at my savings as I need servicing and MOT at the same time. The though of being without the car for a couple of months while I get the money together is not a pleasant one...

    Thanks in advance everyone! :)

Hi, don't worry - I have had no trouble setting up direct debits since being on a dmp - had my car insurance through PayPlan - Bluefin.
I'm guessing you have moved bank accounts to a bank that has an understanding of your situation?

Hi, please keep updating on the daily charges from the bank since I am in the same position - 1.90 per day - worried about where this leads us...

    Hi

It might take a while but the banks will probably refund some of the charges.

Santander did the same with me the charges pushed me over my od limit, then they removed my od limit so I was a couple of thousand overdrawn, and being charged for it. A lot!

After a bit of complaining they have stopped interest and charges and refunded part of the interest.

Soooo, it is a worrying time but once they see the DMP payments going they should hopefully play ball but you may have to fight your corner a bit.

    Good luck and keep posting,

  • Thanks for all the help so far everyone. I sent the letters today!!! Dropping them in the post box was terrifying. I've always been someone who didn't want to let on if I was having a problem with anything - esp money - so this is probably the worst part, the actually asking for help and admitting I can't do it anymore.

What keeps me going is thinking of the position that I could put our future children in if I don't clear this debt before I get pregnant. I've screwed up but I don't want them to be affected, especially as my husband comes from a background where money was tight and neither of us have family to fall back on.

Thanks for the advice re the car insurance - that was worrying me a bit! I've moved my account to another bank and cancelled my DDs last night to the loan companies. That was also quite scary! Should I make the first token payment on the date that the DD would normally go out? CCCS advised £1 but that seems so little. I know the point is that I'm broke and can't afford to pay them but is £1 the same as £5? I'm guessing all I'm really doing is preventing a default, but I don't want to antagonise them. On the other hand I don't want to pay a higher amount in case it sends the message that I might be able to pay more than CCCS are offering. Anyone been there and could post what happened with their tokens?

    Thanks again :)

    Hi

Just do as CCCS say and pay £1, its just showing a willingness to pay thats all. You've broken your agreement as it is so just stick with the £1 until your DMP is up and running.

Oh and don't cave into any pressure to pay more.

You've done the right thing in starting your DMP, it will settle down trust me.

  • completely agree with Eyeopener, it makes no difference to the bank or how they treat you, so pay £1 and try to squirrel away some cash for emergencies.

  • Hi Fortunepig, again I completely agree with what others are saying regarding token payments. I made payments of £1 which felt really strange but you are showing a willingness to pay and that is the important bit. Any cash that you might have spare can then go into your emergency fund
