I usually recycle my tesco carriers as bin liners.

Not sure how many bags will last a second shop either - mine don't always make it as bin bags as they have split.

    Now here's a sneaky thought....

    1st time, use carriers/boxes/suitcase.

Pick up a handful of new bags as you leave (don't forget to scruch them up a bit).
Hey presto bags already for next time plus you still get bin bags.
(They can't argue about the number of bags if you have just packed normal ones brought from home!)

Or does this rather defeat the object of the exercise?

I agree that the bags are pretty poor.

I always return my used bags to the recycling bins outside the store, although I do then need to take new bags.

What a great idea! Or just go to a till before you shop and grab a load!

Tesco didn't think of that did they!
  • Also, didnt Sainsburys use to give you a penny for each carrier bag you reused too??!!

Hi, yes they did - i prefered that to Tesco's points (I'd rather have the cash!!!)...I used to put the pennies into my son's piggy bank...he had quite a bit saved at the end of the year!

Somewhat - aside from the obvious cost saving for Tesco, the other objective is to actually do a little bit for the enviroment as well.

I know! It was a bit of a rhetorical question, really - I couldn't find a 'tongue in cheek' smilie!

I do reuse my bags anyway. I used to use them more - for storage, wrapping, padding etc, until they made them bio-degradable and they disintegrated after about a year leaving mess to be hoovered up in my loft!!!

I'm sure that the going green PR bit is the thing that Tesco are most interested in. Makes them look good, raises their profile, more people shop there etc etc (as if they don't have enough of the market share already).

Personally, I think that Tesco's standards have been slipping recently - I thought maybe it was just our store but noticed it when on my hols too. Store has been extended and re-arranged but products aren't in sensible order, often large gaps on the shelves, fresh fruit and veg doesn't seem to be as good quality, range of basic meat seems to be reduced, larger value packets of biscuits, rolls, frozen veg etc have been discontinued, never any staff on the floor when you need them...
Is it just me or do others find the same?

I agree, I went shopping last week at a Tesco Superstore and they had no potatoes  I managed to grab 4 packaged baking potatoes from old stock out of 3 packets that were left over on the top shelf :o

Just come back from shopping in our local Tesco Express. Bought 2 items valued £3.18 The till slip lists the 2 items plus Bag re-use @£0.00 Points gained 3. The SA tried to give me a bag on approaching the till. I said I had my own and as 1 item was ice-cream he wanted to give me a bag for this. Admittedley my own bag was nearly full, but they look as though they are going to acknowledge own -bag use on the till slip. Did I miss out bercause the scheme has not started or because I did not fill a bag?

Im sure home delivery man will love me when my £100 tesco shop turns up each week and i make them wait so that i can empty all the bags and get 10 clubcard points!
Saying that though they do ask me for my old bags sometimes or maybe i am mishearing and they are calling me an old bag?!
I do use the bags for the kids lunches as it stops their lunch box(styled like bags) getting all stinky and gross like they usually do.

I also use my old carrier bags for the little bins that are dotted about the house...and I expect quite few other people do too!
I consider myself to be very lucky. :j Apart from my mortgate, I am debt free. I do not own a credit card and I even have £400 saved in Premium Bonds. :A :grouphug:

Hiya useful post. Do you know how the 20 points for other containers will work? Is it your own shopping trolley with wheels etc?

    ta
A couple of quick points from Tesco Employee ;)

    a) Tesco carrier bags alreadt bio-degrade - try using one as a bin bag after its spent 9 months at the back of a draw and you will see what I mean

    b) The provision of carrier bags is a massive cost for any retailer. Anything to bring those costs down is a sensible move for any company that wants to maintain its profit growth.

    c) The first time I am called to the CSD about an argument about how many green points a customer should get, I am going to be having serious words with the cashier - Life is just too short to argue about a couple of points here or there.

    d) Charging for bags (a la Ireland) is pretty much going to require an act of Parliment. For every enviromently astute customer there is another ten who could not care less (unfortunatly).

    e) Personaly, this will give me an extra 15 or so points a week....which will all go towards a nice holiday next year :D

Cynical move or not, I can not see how anyone losses here - cheaper costs for Tesco, less waste for the enviroment, CC points for the consumer. Win-Win-Win, no?
