In my area they have now decided to use members of the public to catch speeding motorists. Like mobile police traps i think. oh and the public who do it (think there are 4 ) are getting paid £16,000 per year

That's disgusting! Any normal person would have had an automatic ban for doing over 100mph & had loads of points on their license & a huge fine!!

Then they wonder why people have no faith in the police or justice system!
Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out

  • How come it took your photo then, or were you walking ;D ;D

When I saw the copper crossing the road towards me I thought I was going to get a lecture about the A38 not being a suitable road for cyclists, but he was just impressed that I could climb through the mendips on a bike, and thought I might like a photo of myself to prove it! ;D

Problem with cameras is they are seen as the sole way to tackle the problem of road deaths which currently run at 3500 per year. Most traffic departments have been disbanded because chief constables do not have performance targets to meet in the area of death and injury on the roads(there are performance indicators in almost every other area of policing).

Murders etc currently run at about 750 per year and you have large teams of specialist officers set up in almost every force to investigate these (which is quite proper) but when a Fatal accident occurs you generally have just ONE investigating officer (constable) with an inspector or sergeant checking progress on a daily basis and a family liaison officer who assists the family of the bereaved.

Hardly anyone is now trained to examine vehicles to the level required by the courts and document offences (licences, mots&insurance) are so far down the pecking order, they are almost forgotten about.

Speed cameras really are just the tip of the iceberg with policing of the roads, when you next drive/ride on a road just think that on average 9.58 people are KILLED on the roads of Great Britain EVERY SINGLE DAY. If that doesn't make people take notice of the speed limit and concentrate on their standard of driving then I'm not sure what will.

Apologies if I come across a bit negative but I happen to value human life just that bit more than the current powers that be it would seem :(

all this stuff about cameras being there to make the roads safer is rubbish, although granted they may actually save lives outside of schools at certain times of the day.In Essex the police admit that most fatalities occur through poor visibility, so try using the A12 past colchester ,this is a main trunk route it has only two narrow lanes and there is not a street light anywhere to be seen .How safe is that!
I also know of a local road bristling with cameras ,yet half a mile away there is a 40mph limit past open plan front gardens on a narrow road with bends. How safe is that! Dont forget all the fines have to pay for all those hangers on and any surplus goes to Gordon Brown, nice racket . PS. Have never been flashed and always try to keep to 30 limit.

i don't agree with speeding cameras which are deliberately hid behind trees, bridges, and signs. they are especially used in areas where the government has not bothered to spend necessary improvements on the road such as the a1 between edinburgh and berwick upon tweed.

It will be interesting to see how people get on with SPECS cameras everywhere and fines /points in proportion to the excess of speed :)

It has got to be fairer than someone doing 45 in a 40 zone getting the same fine/points as someone doing 102 :-/

    I have a question...

If you are caught speeding on a camera surely you can deny that you were driving the car at the time - please correct me if I'm wrong but in law you do not have to incriminate someone else therefore it would then be up to the Police to proove you were the driver in order to prosecute. As budgets are tight this would be a costly exercise and the case would be dropped by the CPS.

Not lawful - but would it work.

I've never been caught speeding but I'm sure I read about this in a newspaper some time ago.
