Display an A4 sheet in your car stating it is for sale. Put on your mobile number. Drive past a GATSO at 55mph. (only back of car shows). When the summons arrives, explain that it was a prospective buyer and that your car was advertised for sale. When the police ask you to provide details of that driver, it is perfectly reasonable not to keep the details of somebody who failed to buy the car.
(I am sure any solicitor will be able to quote the relevant precedent case for this).
Score 1 to the motorists and nil points to the c**ts in uniform.

Am I the only person who when travelling past a speed camera, just stares at the speedo just to make sure I'm within the limit. If someone were to run out in front of my car I would be too busy watching my speed, rather than the road.
Finally, if there's one thing worse than people who speed, it's people who sit at ONE speed (usually about 45mph) whatever the limit!

I get stuck behind people like this all the time, and my car hasn't got the power to overtake them. I always find people driving at 30mph in a 40 limit, then as soon as they approach the big '30' sign they accelerate to 40mph. Why?? If your going to stick to the speed limit, why not stick to it all the time???
She carried on and - as my bonnet reached the white line to stop for her - jumped out of her skin when she saw me so close! Not only had she not looked at the lights, waited for them to change etc but she also couldn't hear my horn which I'd blasted for about five or six seconds.

If people didn't walk out onto the road then no-one would get run over. If I want to walk to the local supermarket I've got to cross the A38. There is no pedestrian crossing or anything. I'm risking my life crossing this road when there are cars travelling at 70mph+. There should be some clever way to keep pedistrians and motorists apart. Although, I've read that new EU regulations mean that cars have to be designed so that you don't hert yourself as much if you get run over.

One more thing, a lot of people have been mentioning not knowing the speed limit. Wouldn't it be a great idea to mark the speed limit on the back of the cameras so that you know, I've annoyed many other people by driving through speed traps at 30mph when the speed limit is a lot more.

If you are caught speeding on a camera surely you can deny that you were driving the car at the time - please correct me if I'm wrong but in law you do not have to incriminate someone else therefore it would then be up to the Police to proove you were the driver in order to prosecute. As budgets are tight this would be a costly exercise and the case would be dropped by the CPS.
It might work, but it doesn't always: they can certainly take you to court for failing to provide the driver's details. And yes, you are expected to incriminate the other driver - would you apply the same principle if someone else borrowed your car and killed someone in a hit and run?

If it's a company vehicle the company is expected to keep details of who was driving which vehicle at any given time. A couple can argue that they genuinely don't know who was driving but the Registered Keeper could be summonsed to court to explain why they don't know, and the penalty is a fine and points, can be more than the speeding offence. Neil and Christine Hamilton got off this way, but not everyone does.

There are a few problems with this. Not all speed cameras are GATSOs, and some give front images which are quite clear. So if you're 'done' by one of these, you may have to prove that your car was for sale - receipts for adverts placed etc might be adequate, but an A4 poster you say was placed in the car at the time might not.

And not retaining details of who test drove your car is not necessarily 'reasonable' either. If you allow someone to test drive your car, you are responsible for ensuring that they are insured to do so. If they're doing it on your insurance, you need to see their driving licence - they may not have one! More and more I'd say that a 'reasonable' person who allows a potential buyer to take a test drive unaccompanied would want to keep details of the potential buyer for this very reason for at least a fortnight - there are too many cameras out there!

If despite my pessimism anyone wants to try either of these tricks, check out https://www.pepipoo.co.uk FIRST! It's all there: the successes, the failures, the angst of waiting to see if you can pull it off ...

Its a bit of a shame that this thread has turned into a discussion about how to lie and cheat your way out of a speeding fine .... it is a very poor reflection on some peoples moral values. Maybe the law in Northern Ireland is different but my understanding (which could be wrong) was that the fine is issued to and payable by the registered keeper of the vehicle. If someone else was driving or you have sold the vehicle and not informed the DVLA then the owner is still responsible.

If you do the crime then you shouldn't start gurning and whingeing about the fine. Justice is when a guilty person is made to pay and an innocent person is found to be innocent ... justice is NOT a guilty person getting off by lying, cheating or finding some pathetic loophole. I believe that when in doubt the law should always be translated as it was meant to read (under common perception) not some obscure ambiguity put forward by various barristers simply to get a client that they know to be guilty off the hook (this is immoral).

Can I just add my opinion. I was prosecuted for driving without due care and attention 17 years ago (I almost wrote off my dad's car). This has changed my driving. I do not claim to be the best driver in the world - I have in fact learnt the hard way that I am not. I now leave more of a gap to the car in front, religiously indicate and drive slower. I am not perfect but I have improved over these years.

Speed cameras are not a panacea - but they do help,as would more traffic police. It's not a case of one or the other but of both.

Better driving would reduce the number of accidents (which will never reach zero) and adherence to the speed limit would reduce the severity of those injuries that do occur (I am an anaesthetist and not infrequently have to patch up the victims) I do get very annoyed that there is never a cop around when I am cut up or tailgated but feel an immense feeling of satisfaction when that light on the camera flashes for someone whose just sped past me.

So, we should educate drivers better - perhaps a driving test every 5 years (like I now have to do to remain a doctor) as well as more traffic police and also cameras.

On a slightly less serious note why is it whenever I am cut up or tailgated its by a BMW? ;)

Speeding drivers who use legal loopholes are actually POLICE OFFICERS who get caught by their own cameras then go to court and avoid conviction of any offence.

A high ranking police officer of Middlesborough avoided conviction for speeding because he could not remember if he or his wife was driving at the time of the offence.

Unless you are in the freemasons I would not advise using this loophole.
