Its difficult to tell what the speed limit is especially when you're in area you dont know well. I got done for doing 43 mph on a dual carriage way.....apparently the speed limit was 30mph.....other streets in the area which were in my opinion much more dangerous.....crossings,junctions, housing.... have a speed limit of 40mph.
In speed camera's defence it has made me much more careful about checking for speed signs....and sometimes I feel I am the only one keeping to the speed limits! However it has shown me that some speed limits are totally ludicrous. There is a dual carrigae way near here between two roundabouts.....one side of the road is 60mph , the other 40mph......no junctions, no crossings, out of town.....so why?x x x0 -
The exact law is that are legal to own and use, but it is illegal to act upon the information given by one. So you can see where the cameras are, but you are not allowed to brake when it beeps.
;D
This is I belive out of date.
It originaly related to the the Telecomincations act, whereby it is ilegal to tune in to Poilice Tranmisions.
There was a court ruling in '99 I think which ruled that the signals from a speed camera are not a comminication and therefor the act does not apply.
in fact Authorities often site safety/speed cameras at known accident blackspots and police have stated that they broadly support any initiative that will assist drivers in becoming more speed aware
so they are legal to use.... ;D ;D ;D ;DThe only place where success comes before work is the dictionary…

I have just got my verdict back and am gutted as I got 3 points and a £220 fine (and a further £35 costs).
By law the police have to let you see evidence before the hearing and therefore go down the station and demand it!!
A friend's sister was caught on a camera and honestly didn't know if it was her or her mum and replied saying this, it went to court and the picture did not show the driver and so no evidence. It was thrown out!!!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Forgot to mention, that a good website to view is
https://www.pepipoo.com
It has advice (law etc) and also likely points and fines that you may get depending on how over the speed limit you were. Also has real cases and forums like this.
Hope you find it useful!!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I bottled out of contesting mine, but now feel far better informed. If you decide to go to court they MUST show you the evidence BEFORE you get there. pepipoo has good advice on how to get it if the scameraship is proving reluctant.
My driving habits have changed a lot following advice found on the IAM website: I drive mostly around town, ie in 30mph speed limits. It's easier to keep to 30 if you don't go above 3rd gear, and almost impossible to keep below 30 in 4th or 5th! http://www.iam.org.uk/Pressroom/News_Releases/2003/nr0326.pdfSignature removed for peace of mind0 -
I've checked out http://www.pepipoo.com/
and found this info on the use of radar detectors:
"Since 29th January 1998, it has been legal to own and use a radar/laser detector in the United Kingdom. In summary, passive radar detectors that simply warn you that they are receiving a radar signal are NOT illegal, but the use of equipment that then transmits a "jamming signal" back to the radar device IS illegal. "Sense is not common.0 -
and of course lets not forget that speeding is illegal. and dangerous.Blah0

In my area they have now decided to use members of the public to catch speeding motorists. Like mobile police traps i think. oh and the public who do it (think there are 4 ) are getting paid £16,000 per yearGive me the boy until he's seven and i'll give you the man.0
