I would have thought a concealed element was better for one cup boilings as people may be tempted to put in more water than needed in order to completely cover the element to avoid damage.
Mmm ,where have I seen the marker pen idea in post #34 b4?;)

It depends on the person. But someone who overfills their kettle would likely do so whether they had a concealed element or not.0 -
Can I suggest that submerged elements may actually be more efficient over time? - because submerged elements fur up, and no-one cleans the fur off THAT efficiently!Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

There's no reason why a submerged element would fur up any faster than a flat concealed base.
Boiling up white vinegar and leaving it to soak for a few hours should clear off most scale anyway.0 -
hi i think everyone is missing the point, the eco kettle apparently uses less energy to boil the water, stated at 3KW apparently this is 30% less then normal kettles,
http://www.earthwhile.co.uk/Shop/Energy_Efficient_Gifts/The_Eco_Kettle/Product.html
having a quick browse a cheap £10 kettle from john lewis:
http://www.johnlewis.com/Electrical/Small+Appliances/Tea+and+Coffee/Kettles/539/230364925/Product.aspx
is only 2000W or 2KW, so its the cheap kettle thats 30% more efficient then the eco kettle
am i right?
Er, is this a joke? If the kettle is only putting in 2/3 of the power it will take 1.5 times longer to boil the water so exactly the same amount of electricity will be used in the end.0 -

Haven't you heard? Cardew has patented the idea of 1W kettles.
I'm reasonably convinced that you could sell a "low energy" kettle to a lot of people in this country. You'd just need to compare the idea to low energy lightbulbs!0 -
