That looks, on the face of it a worthy invention (for those who believe in the end of the world type scenario and believe they can do something to prevent it), but it's really just a complicated way of turning the tap off.
Gadgets, don't ya just love 'em...

Its more Eco Friendly to boil the water you need for Tea and Coffee in a pan or Kettle on a Gas Ring as opposed to using Electric Kettles. Uses less Energy.
    No it doesn't.

The electric kettle (with a traditional element) is one of the most efficient devices you can buy.

A gas hob has to first heat the pan or kettle, then heat the water. All the time it is heating the surrounding air too!
You’re forgetting that, for conventional fossil fuel power stations, the production and distribution of electricity isn’t particularly efficient either. I seem to remember a figure of 40% efficiency, from a recent TV program.

hi i think everyone is missing the point, the eco kettle apparently uses less energy to boil the water, stated at 3KW apparently this is 30% less then normal kettles,
    http://www.earthwhile.co.uk/Shop/Energy_Efficient_Gifts/The_Eco_Kettle/Product.html

having a quick browse a cheap £10 kettle from john lewis:

    http://www.johnlewis.com/Electrical/Small+Appliances/Tea+and+Coffee/Kettles/539/230364925/Product.aspx

is only 2000W or 2KW, so its the cheap kettle thats 30% more efficient then the eco kettle

    am i right?

I hope you are being ironic – but with the level of electrical knowledge on this forum, one cannot be sure. Anyway ironic or not you will confuse!!!

If a 2000W(2kW) kettle is 30% more efficient than a 3000W(3kW) kettle, then why don’t we have a 1W(0.001kW) kettle as that will be thousands of times more efficient!

The point being made in the post above is that electricity is, for all practical purposes, 100% efficient in converting power to heat. The only consideration with items like kettles is the amount of heat lost.

Thus a 2kW kettle will use the same amount of electricity(power) to boil, say, a pint of water than a 3kW kettle – it will use less power but for longer.

The Eco-kettle adverts are frankly a scam as they imply(but don’t actually state) that they are cheaper to operate; and they are not. They are no ‘greener’ and no more environmentally friendly; all they do is put a huge profit into the pockets of those who see an opportunity to exploit the green mania gripping the UK.

I bought a whistling kettle because my OH kept reboiling the electric one as he'd forget he'd put it on a go off and get distracted. Now he can't ignore the whistle and goes and makes his cuppa straight away so it has definitely saved energy in our house. And yes... we both only boil what we need.

Some kettles have a concealed element to allow just the smallest amount of water to be boiled without blowing out- other kettles have higher elements which mean you need to fill them with more than cupful of water to boil a kettle.

To save energy be like me and just drink plain tap water- no need for tea to be shipped halfway round the world either.:p

I'm guilty of this too. I've often wondered why all electric kettles can't have a whistle fitted as standard.
