I was toying with idea, although I heard the older model had problems. I then looked on net for more comments and also found that the measures on the kettle were for cups, and not mugs which is pretty pointless for most of the population who use mugs.

Have a look at my post about measurement in the link of post 24 of this thread ..substitute cups with mugs.

Some kettles have a concealed element to allow just the smallest amount of water to be boiled without blowing out- other kettles have higher elements which mean you need to fill them with more than cupful of water to boil a kettle.

But kettles with concealed elements are less efficient anyway. Since a proportion of the heat is lost through the base without having an effect on heating the water.

hi i think everyone is missing the point, the eco kettle apparently uses less energy to boil the water, stated at 3KW apparently this is 30% less then normal kettles,
    http://www.earthwhile.co.uk/Shop/Energy_Efficient_Gifts/The_Eco_Kettle/Product.html

having a quick browse a cheap £10 kettle from john lewis:

    http://www.johnlewis.com/Electrical/Small+Appliances/Tea+and+Coffee/Kettles/539/230364925/Product.aspx

is only 2000W or 2KW, so its the cheap kettle thats 30% more efficient then the eco kettle

    am i right?

So a 60W light bulb is 40% more efficient than a 100W light bulb?

You learn something new every day!

It wouldn't say anything. It would just be a green box. They'd make millions! ;)

    Gah,

Buy the biggest wattage kettle you want. The quicker it heats the better as less is lost out of the sides of the kettle whilst heating.

Take your favorite most used mug. Fill it to the appropriate level allowing for steam and teabag.

Pour into kettle. Mark level with perminant marker. Repeat until you have filled the kettle to max. Note, if the kettle has a min use it. Hopefully it will coincide with your 1 mug/cup mark. If not fill to the NEXT level and rub off the perminant mark for one mug/cup.

When boiling put spare water into thermos or similar flask for later use.

This way your kettle does not boil any more water than is necessary, does not damage itself and is efficent because when you next want a cuppa, use the water in the thermos.

Grow mint on your windowsil and add to cup to make nice fresh mint tea with no milage except from the windowsil to your cup. Huzzah!

Remember to descale regularly if in a hard water area!

You now have a kettle with all the mug settings on it and is as efficient as you can afford.

Gas kettles may/may not be more efficient. If you heat a kettle with gas you will end up heating the house as well. If it is a cold day, this is good. If you have the windows open, this is bad.

Powerstations are quite effective and gas powered better than coal etc. It's a mine field and I'm sure someone somewhere has worked it out. Personally I prefer to heat my water in a kettle and cook on the stove. Each to their own. People with AGAs are best suited to hob kettles...
