Eco Friendly Kettle - Useful Or Gimmick? (Merged)

I'd say the main advantage is that you can boil small quantities of water, very quickly, a number of times without having to refill the kettle every time you do it and the gauge makes it easy to dispense roughly the right amount of water into the kettle.
If you're making large pots of tea/rounds of drinks where you'll empty the kettle every time or if you insist on filling the kettle with fresh water every time you make a drink then they're no better than regular kettles.0 -
From an "eco-kettle ad":-
"This kettle saves up to 30% of the energy used by a conventional kettle".
This can described as "misleading" or a "blatant lie" - take your pick.
Different electric kettles will use the same amount of energy to boil the same amount of water ! Regardless of whether they are "eco", "green" or just "cheap".
Q. If you invented a kettle that actually did use 30% less energy to boil a given amount of water, would you:
a. Sell it for £34.99 a go, so that only a few well-heeled people would buy it
OR
b. Sell it for £4.99 so that every one could buy it - and make yourself richer than Bill Gates ?
If you want an eco kettle, buy this:-

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has one of those 'Eco Kettle's?
I'm needing a new kettle and thought it would be a good idea. Though now I'm looking into it I suspect they could be annoying to use; and are they any better than any other kettle with a flat element and a volume measure on the side??
Are there any other kettles you would recommend as 'green'?
Thanks,
Sx
Hi, following a thread of mine on here, I got my mum to buy me one for my birthday.
I like it, I fill the storage chamber and then transfer what's needed.
It boils quickly and it doesn't seem to be boiling for ages before it clicks off, also it's a lot quieter than my De Longhi rapid boil kettle.
If the storage chamber is full, then it does seem strange to have to tip it right over to pour the hot water out.
When I've poured out the boiled water, I then transfer enough for 1 cup into the boiling chamber ready, I also feel that I'm using the heat remaining in the element IYSWIM.
I don't know how much it is saving me, but I'm sure it is more economical than using my other thing without a guage on the side.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
Ah but it has an 'unnecessary' neon lamp which will probably use an extra 0.1 watts.
"unnecessary neon lamps on kettles" that's it, the next "anti-standby campaign".
I'm off to start a petition to get Gordon to ban neon lamps on kettles. If he does that we could save the planet!!!!!
I just hope the domain SayNoToNeonLamps.com has not been taken.0 -
I'm sure that, for a price, you can get dolphin-friendly neon kettle lamps.0

Hehe, thanks everyone. That certainly answered my question.
I think I'm going to opt for a normal kettle and become a volume boiled dictator instead.
Thanks for the link to the other thread too, I did try and do a search but for some reason failed to find it.
I'm a bit sad you've reminded me of the evil of light up kettles...I thought they looked rather cool!0 -
There is a review of the eco kettle here:
