What a fantastic thread. Well done everyone. I do most of these things and had considered that one day I might write them all down in a book. Now you all have done it for me.
In almost 40 years of marriage I have never bought an ironing board cover or a duster.
I use part of an old sheet (salvaged from MIL's house clearance) over a piece of old blanket doubled which originally belonged to my mother, pinned on with DD's nappy pins - she is 38.
When the middle of the ironing board cover becomes worn, I remove it, cut off the good corners and machine hem them for dusters - they last for ages, much longer than using rags as they don't fray away.

I have this big shopping day ritual. I do my meal plan based on my organic veggie box and what's left over in the fridge/freezer, then I go onto mysupermarket.co.uk to create a shopping list at whichever supermarket I'll be near to. I then do the price swap and print out the list. I then take the list (which has the prices printed on it) to a nearby 'cheap' store such as lidl and iceland and see if I can drop the price even more. I then go to the list grocer and see if I can drop the price even more by getting something that mysupermarket overlooked.
I also keep a load of plastic bags in the bag of my car for Lidl/Aldi visits so I'm never caught without.£4000 challenge

I'll admit to doing a lot of things already mentioned especially to get every last drop out of stuff.I don't eat Cornflakes but OH and DS do and and they always leave loads at the end of a box "because they're too small" which annoys me, so I'll be trying the idea of pouring them back into the new box. Although they don't actually get wasted as we feed them to our hens. Something I do - I don't like salty crisps so I buy salt and shake ones but don't use the salt so I tear the little packet open and empty it into my salt pot.On what to do with buttons - this is a good game at Christmas. Spread some buttons on a tray and each person has one minute to find as many pairs as they can. In our house this gets really competative with everyone going back for more goes to try and beat the highest score.
Wow that brought back some memories! We used to play with my nan's button tin, endless games like this, especially at Christmas with all my cousins - how all our parents must have wept as we pushed aside the toys and played with some old buttonsGC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -

If I badly scuff my shoes I gently rub in some vaseline to smooth down the leather and leave overnight before giving them a really good polish. OH underpants used to get used as floorcloths.... until Mum came to stay and she carefully mended them... thinking the holey things were what he wore!!!!
Now I CUT OFF THE CROTCH before they are transformed into floorcloths!
Now your mother is going to think that your OH routinely wears crotchless underpants. Holey ones too.0 -
I wear only one contact lens a day instead of two, thus cutting in half the cost of my daily disposables.
I see perfectly adequately with just the one lens and my prescription hasn't changed in 5 years so it doesn't seem to be harming my eyes. In fact I expect the practice "exercises" the eye that doesn't have the lens in (a bit like when kids have to wear a patch to exercise a lazy eye). I alternate eyes every day so it evens out.
