Me too, I even bought a 'device' from the pound shop which is a plastic circle with lots of small pegs hanging off it with a hook on top that you can hang up (its probably for drying socks and pants) and I peg them all on that and hang them on the curtain rail over the radiator to dry!! My boyfriend's mates think I am a bit nutty:p but we have more spare money for nice things so I don't care!0 -
I wear only one contact lens a day instead of two, thus cutting in half the cost of my daily disposables.
I see perfectly adequately with just the one lens and my prescription hasn't changed in 5 years so it doesn't seem to be harming my eyes. In fact I expect the practice "exercises" the eye that doesn't have the lens in (a bit like when kids have to wear a patch to exercise a lazy eye). I alternate eyes every day so it evens out.
I'm about to be told off by an optician aren't I?
Well - could be!
But I seem to recall reading that the daily disposable contact lenses arent that much different to monthly ones - ie one can just as well wear a "daily" pair for a month. Maybe someone else can clarify on that one? But the "daily" idea did seem to be a bit of a con by opticians.0 -
Hi. I'm pretty new to this but, having read about some of the tips, here's one that I got from a work mate several years ago. If you cut the lid of a marge/spread tub, you can use it to scrape out the bowls when making cakes, sauces etc so you don't lose anything.
Also, my mum used to get us to make door sausages by stuffing the leg of a pair of old tights with loads more old tights. We used to all sit and roll newspaper spills when we had a coal fire, and Mum frequently had clothes on the clotheshorse around the fire.
We always shut the curtains as soon as it started to get dark, "as the glass lets the cold in!" and even though we have double glazed doors, we use door curtains to reduce the cold from the glass there.
I've just found a pattern to knit carrier bags into a long lasting shopper, so am planning to have a go at that.
I've seen a few things on here that I'm going to try, so thank you to all of you!:TDMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

The daily ones are much much thinner than the monthly ones. I really couldn't see them lasting a month, and would be quite surprised tbh if they survived a night in the cleaning solution. They rip very easily.0 -
. Think I get this from nan, she used to have a button box... must have been thousands in there.:rotfl:DMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

Gosh, you've just reminded me of something I'd long forgoten:T . My mum used to do a similar thing with white cotton underwear that had gone a bit dingy'grey looking. Socks, knickers and bras were often boiling away in a large pot on the stove.
Knickers soup anyone?:rotfl:
We had that regularly. :rotfl:Like the button tin, I've also inherited the boiling pan! I can see I'll end up commenting on everyone's post if I'm not careful. This is brilliant.DMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

Anyone else sat with extra layers on and socks instead of putting the heating on  my gas and electric bills through the roof (just come in) so trying to cut back wherever I can. Must admit have been a bit paranoid and although they have more on for bed have checked on the boys several times just to check they are warm enough as I'm feeling it tonight especially. Need to do something to get that bill down!
I have to have the heating on all day every day as son is home. :eek:He has CFS/ME so has to be careful not to get too cold. He doesn't notice he's getting there as his thermostat doesn't work! He can't always stand to have too many clothes on either, so the only way round it is to make sure the house is warm.As for me, I'll put on extra socks, wear a waistcoat (does anyone else feel warmer if their back is warm?) or put a throw/blanket over my knees. We don't use hot water bottles, but son and I both like wheat bags. (OH doesn't, but he'll put on the extra clothes).DMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

It depends - Ceridwen is right, and there is some information about it on the MSE site here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/health/Cheap-Contact-Lenses#daily
Since reading this, I have started using my daily lenses for a week, and that works fine! They are not the cheapest ones though (acuvue). Sadly I will now very soon have to move on to bifocal lenses, which do not come as dailies, and are quite expensive. I may have to get back to specs! Or stick with the dailies and carry reading glasses around."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0
