You can get free prescriptions if you have a continuing physical disability which means you can't go out without help from another person and have a valid MedEx - you can get the form from your GP.

Some people have said you have to be on HRM or MRC / HRC DLA - this is not true.

Bring along your DLA or IB letter along with you. I have to bring it along because I am mentally disabled.

I feel it is best to ask for what is on offer all the time for disabled. I found out from a friend that T-Mobile has a special number that allows you direct call without press 1 for this and 3 for that. You get direct to a person to deal with everything. Also my friend said that they offer free directory enquires to those who have certain disabilities. I used them for the direct line when I was with t-mobile.

I found out that my local children's farm offers discounts for carers & disabled person.

I am going to ask my local local authority to see if they offer free playscheme places.

~My library offers no book or DVD fines for late items for disabled people. I also don't pay if I take out a DVD. The no late fines really reduces the stress and anxiety for me. My partner can also take out the dvds for me on my behalf. I order them online including books and he picks them up.

MY hubby has just applied for his free bus pass cos on HRM and they said that if he cant go on the bus alone then the carer also goes free but the pass has to have the c box ticked and have his carer with him and if he doesnt then he can be asked to vacate the bus. But have to say surely if hes on hrm then they should know he cant go on alone.

HappySad, in our area, there are playschemes for children with disabilities during the Easter and summer holidays. Each child is offered nine hours at Easter and 39 hours in the summer. The only charge is 50p for snack. There is no transport though, except in exceptional circumstances (when it costs £5).

Aiming Higher for Disabled Children in my area concentrates on short breaks for disabled children. It might be worth asking what is happening in your area. (Short breaks don't have to mean being away from home - it can include support to attend a group such as Brownies, or a place in a special needs club).

Thanks KingFisherBlue about the childcare. We have a local SureStart nursery and I will just ask to see if I can get a discount of free place. There is no harm in asking just in case.

Our local Mind center offers very low cost activities like visit to health gym, horse riding, music lesson and walks.

Thats rubbish, I have a C+ card for when Im in my manual chair and I also use my pass alone when Im in my powerchair, I cant walk and have a indefinate HRM award which dosnt mean I cant go out alone but that I cant walk!

Being unable to walk or vertually unable to walk dosnt mean that you cant go out alone and I expected better from a disability site than to hear such rubbish thats normally gets spouted by ignorant abled bodied people.

It's worth checking your local council guidelines for bus-passes.

I get LRM and so don't automatically qualify for a bus-pass. However, my council give them to people on LRM if they can prove they would not be able to apply for a driving licence on medical grounds (other than drug/alcohol/substance abuse ). My doctor provided a letter which was accepted as proof, and I am so thrilled to have a pass - it makes a real difference to me!

Photocopy your blue badge (both sides) then show this. If they query it tell them the original is displayed in the car outside/nearby in the car park & that you are willing to go with them & show them if they like. As if any cashier is going to walk to go check when you have photocopies in your hand.

Always works for us.
