Ive just made some fudge
800g gran sugar
2 tsp vanilla ess
100g butter
270 ml semi milk
mmmmmmmnnnnnnnnn0 -
Noodle - I know, but last time I bought sugar it was in a bargain 5kg sack thatI decanted into plastic staroage container.
Today I want to make some scottish tablet and Grannies recipe says 1 bag of sugar - thats 1 kilo? Right??
Could someone open their kitchen cupboard and have a quick look for me please?
Ooooh!! and if you fancy making some
GRAN'S SCOTS TABLET
- Warning for the very sweet toothed amongst you:j
1/4lb stork margarine
1 tea cup of full fat milk
1 bag granualated sugar
1 tin Fussels milk (Now called Carnation Condensed Milk)
Grease a swiss roll tin and set aside.
Go to bathroom and then make yourself a cup of tea - you will be standing at the hob for half an hour :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
On Med heat melt the marg in the milk (but don't boil, just warm)
Add the sugar and bring to the boil
Add the tin on condensed milk and bring to boil again then keep at a rolling boil for 20 minutes (you will need to stir all the time). The mix will turn a rich toffee colour.
Remove from the heat and beat briskly for 5 minutes.
Pour into the greased tin and mark out into pieces whilst still warm and softish. Leave to cool completely then break into pieces.
If you scrape the pan well onto a saucer you will have a wee lump that you can taste without breaking into your tray for a while.
This is tooth achingly sweet - but great for Xmas sweeties and also quite traditional at the end of a dinner with a pot of coffee.
Hope you can help

Hi Memorygirl,
Yes - a bag of sure is 1kg - just had a look!
I'm going to try making the tablet - it's my favourite but I've always been put off making it as you really do have to keep an eye on it. Would it be okay for me to use a baking tray (the one I do my brownies in) rather than a swiss roll tin? Also, should I also line this tray?
Thanks0 -

Thanks joshieg3011
Just got the baby offf for his afternoon nap soperfect time to make tablet.
Yup!! you really have to keep an eye on the tablet as its cooking - you really can't drift off and do something else (hence Granny warning me to go to loo before cooking LOL)
Baking tray for Brownies should be fine - you are aiming for the poured mix to be about 1cm thick but here or there doesn't really matter.
Just make sure you grease the tin really well - don't scrimp on the marg. Then I think the secret is to leave the tablet until it goes really cold before turning out.
If you do this and it turns out soft rather than "crisp" its because you haven't boiled it long and hard enough - but its one of those recipes that I learned by eye watching Granny making it.
Be back when the tablets done

Hi Memory Girl,
A bag of sugar today is indeed 1 kg so I imagine that is roughly the amount your Gran would have used, however if her recipe is an old one bags of sugar used to be 2lbs so you may need slightly less.
To ensure that your Gran's recipe doesn't get lost I'll add this thread to the main tablet recipe thread to keep the recipes together.

Thanks Pink - you are always on the ball.
Tablet finished - 108 pieces - looks lovely and the house smells fabulous, all sugary and domestic "godessy".
Just introduced the baby to a bit off the saucer - think he's discovered his sweet tooth :rotfl:. Love the faces they make when they encounter something new.
Thanks everyone for your help this afternoon

Hi laura,
The amount of sugar will depend on the individual recipe and the quantity you're planning to make.
These threads have recipes that use less than 1kg sugar:
Butter Tablet Recipe Please
Making Tablet (Toffee) in the Microwave - Recepie Please
I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the tips and advice together.
