This sounds interesting - but what is tablet

I thought it was a medicine, but obviously not - would be nice to see this recipe if you could direct me.

    Thanks.

    Hi 1sttimer,

This thread may help: Butter Tablet Recipe Please

I'll add this thread to that one later to keep the ideas together.

  • Thanks - just printed off the recipe - with photos - (it's wonderful what you can do at work with the boss away:D ) It looks like fudge to me, which is a favourite in our house! I may try this sometime - I'm not sure I've time before Christmas unfortunately, but then I've something to look forward to do in the New Year.

it is similar, but the texture's totally different & should turn out firmer than fudge

    I'm sure you'll love it :)
  • Here is my fail safe recipe for tablet. I make it every Christmas and it has now become a tradition in the family.

    2 lb sugar ( I use caster )
    1 lg tin condensed milk
    4 oz butter
    1 teacup of milk

Put everthing into a large, heavy pan ( I use the base of my pressure cooker ) and bring to the boil VERY SLOWLY, stirring occasionally.(I set my electric ring at the halfway heat setting. ) This takes about 35 - 40 mins as you need to make sure that the sugar is properly dissolved.

Once it starts to bubble up, I turn up the heat slightly and continue to boil it for 20 mins, stirring all the time. Take it off the heat and beat it for a couple of mins with the wooden spoon then pour into a greased baking tray.

When it is just starting to set, mark it into squares. When properly cool, I cover it with cling film and put it into the fridge for a few hours and you should find it comes out of the tray in one whole piece. Then it is just a matter of breaking it up into squares and storing ( haha) it in a tin.

    Good luck.

Is the tea cup you use a measuring cup? If not, how much is in a teacup? I have 2/3 different sizes of cup in my house!

Tablet is like the crumbly variety of fudge (not the creamy smooth variety many shops call fudge!). I thought it was a Scottish thing. Oh I want to make some now (hmmmm made flapjacks and gingerbread muffins yesterday too). Do you think if I make it and hide it somewhere (well most of it anyway) it would keep ok for a Christmas dinner nibble with tea/coffee ?

I think a teacup is 6 fluid ounces

I'll go & check & report back ... if no-one else does first

EDIT ... yep, around 6-6 1/2 fluid ounces/just over175 ml (I hope that's right, not very good at metric :o) it shouldn't be critical if it's a little bit out one way or the other

teacups do vary in size, see my post on next page
