Sorry - i didnt mean a recipe I meant one with more flavours (for example mint, strawberry, nuts etc). Perhaps just best to do some test runs and throw some ingrediants in at the end!

Oh no that's so wrong :D Tablet is meant to be plain, why don't you make fudge if you want to flavour it or I'll get the tablet police onto you :rotfl:

  • I've just made a pan of tablet and it has turned out great. here's my recipe

    1 cup of whole milk
    1/4 stick of unsalted butter
    1 bad of sugar (1kg I think)
    1 tin of condensed milk

Put the sugar, milk and butter into a large pan (it will quadruple in volume so watch out).
Heat gently until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved, stirring occasionally.
Add the condensed milk and bring to the boil.
    Boil for 5 mins
Drop a bit into cold water, if it firms up then it's ready
Beat for 3-5 minutes until the texture turns grainy (you can feel and hear when this happens)
Pour into a tray and leave to set. I always line the tray with greaseproof paper
You can tell if it's going to set within a minute or so, the top starts almost instantly

    here's mine.

I'm totally with you there :rotfl:
The only thing I would add to mine is a few drops of vanilla delish :D

Hahah stumbled across this thread while having my morning cuppa and thought I'l but in :D
Havent read back through all the posts so appologies if loads of you do - I read the few on this page and was beginning to wonder if i was alone in adding milk but saw that you do aswell!!! Phew thought I was alone :rotfl:
I love the stuff and always end up making it for bakes sales etc and for my friends hubby everytime he comes home (normally gets the request in when he has a date for returning). Certainly not good for the teeth though ;)

ETA - going back to read the rest of the posts now and prob find that loads of you add milk hehehehehe

Here is my fail safe recipe for tablet. I make it every Christmas and it has now become a tradition in the family.

    2 lb sugar ( I use caster )
    1 lg tin condensed milk
    4 oz butter
    1 teacup of milk

Put everthing into a large, heavy pan ( I use the base of my pressure cooker ) and bring to the boil VERY SLOWLY, stirring occasionally.(I set my electric ring at the halfway heat setting. ) This takes about 35 - 40 mins as you need to make sure that the sugar is properly dissolved.

Once it starts to bubble up, I turn up the heat slightly and continue to boil it for 20 mins, stirring all the time. Take it off the heat and beat it for a couple of mins with the wooden spoon then pour into a greased baking tray.

When it is just starting to set, mark it into squares. When properly cool, I cover it with cling film and put it into the fridge for a few hours and you should find it comes out of the tray in one whole piece. Then it is just a matter of breaking it up into squares and storing ( haha) it in a tin.

    Good luck.

Wow this is my recipe that I use!! Couldnt get the teacup of milk part right to start with - as others have said I have several sized cups in my house so after a bit of trial and error I found that 120ml of milk is perfect :D
Oh and I add about 5 drops of vanilla to mine

Ha ha - only want to put flavours in it as I know another person that is making tablet for the wedding and hers is amazing so don’t want a direct comparison where mine will be found lacking!!
    :o
  • My mum and gran have always made flavoured tablet!! the best is coconut, ginger is also a winner. In the 70s my mum used to make v exotic "rum n raisin" :-0 a bit strange

I'm hoping someone will help me out here please.
I made 2 trays of what I thought was lovely soft squidgy fudge, but used a 'tablet' recipe instead. I'm not keen on it TBH, as I wanted soft, more chewy fudge instead of this more 'crumbly' type stuff.

What can I do with it? can I melt it down again? Beat it more? Use it for anything else?

I have a big bowl of it and don't want to waste it.

I've done this before by accident. I'm not a fan of it myself - but I found that everyone else that I'd made it for loved it! I don't know about melting it down or anything - I've not tried - but maybe you'll find it will be just as popular anyway?

Sorry if that's not helpful - good luck!

    .... Oh Tablet.

I had no idea of what it was the first time I bit into it. Then I needed to run a marathon to prevent lapsing into a hyperglycemic coma.

    I would bury it...

Alternatively you could try remelting it to use as some sort of sauce for icecream or sticky toffee pudding. Would that work?

Sauce would be good, but what would I add so it wouldn't go hard again?
