  • :(:( - Just cracked open the Wii Fit to take my official starting weight, and I'm 11 stone 1lb, which apparently gives me a BMI of 25.5.

Onwards and upwards though eh??? I'm off out to start running just as soon as I finish my water!

Welcome to the thread electric_comperella! Which plan have you devised? Any tips are always gratefully received!!

    Hi Tara

Well the plan I devised and researched for hours (I'm OCD/Studying undergraduate nutrition ) is tailored 100% to my goal/current weight/body type/height (which would probably be quite different from you - as I weigh significantly more :o)

I'm concentrating less on actual weight-loss on the scales and focussing on bodyfat % as my motivator (as we know weight can fluctuate massively for us girls depending on hormone levels) - this I feel can be really demotivating when you suddenly put 1lb on overnight!

Bodyfat % can't be tricked as easily and is actually a better guide of overall health than BMI (BMI doesn't work for the genetically petite or muscular) and it actually shows you that your workouts ARE working!

I'd rather be healthy and weigh a little more than my "ideal" weight than starve and be unwell.

I tend to convert fat to muscle fairly easily - so when I put my mind to it with exercise can actually start weighing more!

I do admit to previously being fixated on daily weigh-ins I feel like I NEED to see progress on a daily basis to motivate me, now I've cut down to twice weekly weigh-ins (I use an electronic scale) and seeing the bodyfat % decrease helps me along.

I can't really offer any tips at the moment as I've only just started and feel sure I'll probably need to "tweak" the plan at intervals to see what works best.

I'll be sure to keep you posted and answer any questions I can

I am trying to reduce my body fat as well Ella, seems like a better measure, I agree!! What do you measure yours with? I'm more interested in my measurements than the scales - and they are not good at the mo! Thanks for your post. :)

    I use a <goes to check>....
  • ...Salter electronic weighing scale....

(thanks for that Tara :) ran up and down the stairs to check)..extra cardio for the day :)

    It measures

    water percentage

    lean body mass percentage

    & body fat

as well as weight and BMI

I avoid tape measures as again these can be "fooled" by the bloating or water stored during the cycle and are quite depressing if you're larger.
  • biggest things to watch for me (everyone is different) are...

    body fat %
carbs (simple and complex - not refined (and in definite MODERATION)
protein (include at every meal (lean unprocessed) helps keep you fuller for longer and encourages the body to shed more fat/water)
calories (depends on your current weight how many you need per day)
water - (depends on your current weight how much you need to sup :))

exercise - (lean muscle mass burns more calories - so burns more fat even when RESTING!! - so definitely include a strength training regime)

May I ask what weight these things go up to w/the extra stuff like body fat?

I'd be really interested in knowing how your plan works out for you and what you feel works and doesn't. :)

Tara, Dear I'm so sorry things are still tough. It must be tough for your OH too, :(. Perhaps you guys can try something different to help your relationship. You are so lovely. Relationships can have blips, but sometimes things need to change somewhere to get things functioning well again. :) Good luck Dear Thing.

Right, well I had a WI today and it said I've lost 5lbs, I'm sure it can't be as much as that! I think the Wii Fit is telling me fibs! I do have quite a few stone to shift, but still! Might go down to Boots tomorrow and use their scales, surely they will be accurate.

Am considering joining a gym, I'm terrified of getting the loose skin and hope that maybe I can try and prevent it as much as possible!

bit confuddled LIR :) easily done

What weight they go up to? I think the scale goes up to 18st with regards to Body fat percentage I would presume they would go all the way to 100% (but that'd never happen - pretty sure morbidity would set in before then!

They use small electrical impulses sent through the body to make the calculation - not suitable for those with pacemakers...

I had a scales that will straighforward weigh up to I think 18-19 stone, but will only work out body fat % on a person weighing I think 15 stone or under or 30% body fat. Can't remember which.
