We mount themed exhibitions throughout the summer months

Although the exhibition is closed from October to April each year, you can still come and meet us! You will find our volunteers at work on various projects every Wednesday and Saturday between 11 am and 4 pm. Just ring the doorbell!
If you wish to visit at other times, please phone 01592 874836 or email us at enquiries@mocft.co.uk to make arrangements.

We run a very popular series of monthly lectures on a wide variety of subjects. We are also developing an education programme, aimed at encouraging young people to consider careers in science and engineering.

We specialise in communications technology from the pre-electric optical telegraph used in the Napoleonic Wars to the latest state-of-the-art webcams and cameras for mobile phones, currently featured in the Guinness Book of World Records!
The Museum has a major collection — over 40 tonnes — of artefacts covering electrostatics, telegraphy, telephony, audio, radio, television and video and IT... as well as some early experimental radar, satellite, photographic and printing equipment plus a technical library of scientific literature and related documentation.
We mount themed exhibitions throughout the summer months, which are designed to stimulate, entertain and educate the public. In order to display the many different facets of our collection, we change our exhibitions at regular intervals (please see our Exhibition and News pages).

Canterbury Roman Museum’s story began on what appeared to be a rather unremarkable day in 1868. When workmen, digging trenches for a new drainage system, reached eight feet below street level they unwittingly unearthed a beautifully preserved Roman floor mosaic. Fast-forward to the aftermath of the Second World War, when excavations began under the cellars of shops destroyed by bombing, and another startling discovery was made.

Archaeologists had just revealed an under-floor heating system, wall paintings, and a dazzling mosaic corridor. The site was no longer an isolated floor mosaic, but the remains of a very large, and no doubt very costly, Roman Town House.

Over time a museum arose to encompass the remains and preserve what is now known to be one of the UK’s only remaining in situ Roman pavement mosaics and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Canterbury Roman Museum is Kent’s only Roman Museum; providing a fascinating and family-friendly insight into life in Roman Britain. Visitors can explore Canterbury’s history, wander through the marketplace and discover hidden treasures as they step back, and down, to the streets of Roman Canterbury…
  • I'd like to see Museum of Somerset in Taunton added to the list of free museums and galleries in the South West of England. It's excellent to visit, and has visiting exhibitions as well as its permanent collection, plus special events, education projects, and a well run cafe and gift shop.
Here is some information about the Museum of Somerset:

    Hi,

Big recommend for Whitworth Art Gallery, Oxford Rd, Manchester (opposite Manchester Royal Infirmary), about 10 minutes walk from Manchester Museum and set in a park. Sometimes has free activities for children, some drop in, some you have to book. There are colouring in sheets, crayons and 2 Minecraft machines available. Free highlights tour at 2pm. I’d post the link, but I’m not allowed!
