Re crossover pinny, I have finally found a pattern, it is the Butterick no. 4945 but I am indignant at having to pay appx £7 plus postage for a pinny pattern! So I have called my trusted aunty in Rome, the most amazing craftswoman in Italy (I think!), she knows how to make anything!
I explained what I was after and, as I am going to visit her at the end of April, I asked her if it would be possible to design a model that can then made up to scale. She thinks it is possible and if we manage to do it I shall post the pics here. It seems unbelievable that there is not a single free crossover pinny pattern in the whole of the web!
Caterina, did you visit your aunt and (most important) did you get your pinny?? Like yourself, I am looking for a crossover type, so would love to see your pictures.

I made an apron in school and still wear it for cooking, washes so well0

I bought a PVC one today with chickens and eggs on. Good fit in that the halter is long enough that the waist ties do go around my waist. The same old problem though: just too small.0

Does anyone know the best place to buy Jessie Steele retro style aprons please? Or any similar 40s/50s type aprons0

I got a nice apron free when I subscribed to Good Food Magazine at the BBC Good Food Show during the summer. The bit that goes around your neck and the ties are all in one long piece that slides through casings at the sides, so when you put it on you can sort of tighten the front up so it's closer to your neck and the top of whatever you're wearing is properly covered. Awful description I know, but it's such a good idea I don't know why it's not more widely used, because most aprons seem to start halfway down your chest.
It's got the Masterchef logo on it, I keep threatening to wear it to work but I don't think they'd let me live it down0 -

Frugalista, hi, YES I got my crossover pinnies, but as my aunt was not very well I got them in the market instead - not so OS but still OS enough to satisfy me.
I bought two at the market. They cost me 10 Euro each, a bit dear for what they are, but they are lovely and I use them a LOT! And they save my "good" clothes. In fact in summer I used them as dresses, too, to go down the shop, much to my auntie's disapproval!
It would be really easy to draw a pattern using them as a base and I could make more - maybe I can even start a business making crossover pinnies for OSers! :rotfl:
If I get an opportunity I shall post a pic! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
I always wear an apron. i make my own. it was the first sewing project my Gran ever taught me.
I dont like the PVC ones as you cant wipe your hands ( or dust something!) with them!
Should add that the aprons are frequently washed for hygiene. The worst one I made was using a very pretty Kath Kidston fabric. It goes like a limp rag and has lost colour and finish very quickly.Norn Iron Club member 4730 -

Can I place an order now please- it will need to fit a rather short, and rather round OSer
