  • I find that I focus more easily on what I'm doing and get more done when I put my apron on... it's a psychological cue to clean/cook and makes me feel very efficient!
Totally agree, as soon as I put my apron on it puts me in the mood for cooking and cleaning. Little wonder my husband likes to see me in my pinny although I like to see him in his pinny as well for the same reason.

I would love to have one of those 40-s/50-s cross-over pinnies for my housework, does anyone know where to get a pattern (free, on the internet)? I have searched but did not find one. Thanks.

I'm amazed this thread is still going! - Shows how important an apron is :)

Don't know about a pattern Caterina but I bought two wrap around pinnies (assuming you mean Hilda Ogden/Nora Batty type?) at a local shop in Portugal a couple of years ago for a princely 4€ each. They are quite common here; even on some young women.

Ah Laura, they used to be quite common in Italy too, I remember my granny wearing one all the time and in summer just wearing it over her slip, no dress underneath! Yes the Hilda/Nora type is exactly what I mean!

I shall have to have a look when I next go to Rome, there are a lot of little shops that a non OSer would easily ignore as "old-lady-ish" (if you know what I mean), I hadn't thought about it, silly me, I am sure that I shall get one there. Thank you for the idea!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I have three cooking aprons and wear them when I cook something splashy and always when I bake. If just making something simple I don't always bother.

I did wonder from your exquisite name if you might have an Italian connection.

I bought one in Tuscany ten years ago as I just loved the colours. Far better than the utility Portuguese offerings.
The shop was like a giant Poundstretcher but with aprons of every type; frills, harness backs, huge tabards that went below the knee & needed to be tied front & back as they were so wide (best coverage of all?)
In the Uk we just get things that are too small, pull at the neck, & being big at the top I fall out of them

Yes they are worn with little else underneath here too ........... & not just by me :)

Totally agree with you, my hairdresser wears a black pvc apron and I think it gives her a totally professional look. Like you, previously she wore a light blue nylon tabbard which had colour, bleach and perm stains on it, looked awful.
Do you wear an apron at home as well or have you had enough of wearing an apron at work.

Yes I do wear an apron at home, I love cooking so I have a pvc apron which I wear for cooking. I really could do with a new apron though I have had it for years and the pvc is starting to crack accross the top of the bib where the neck strap joins on.
My birthday is coming up shortly so hopefully my partner will buy me a nice new one.

    Andy,

Have you had your birthday yet, if so did your partner get you a new apron and what is it like.

Thank you Laura, what a kind compliment about my name!

Re crossover pinny, I have finally found a pattern, it is the Butterick no. 4945 but I am indignant at having to pay appx £7 plus postage for a pinny pattern! So I have called my trusted aunty in Rome, the most amazing craftswoman in Italy (I think!), she knows how to make anything!

I explained what I was after and, as I am going to visit her at the end of April, I asked her if it would be possible to design a model that can then made up to scale. She thinks it is possible and if we manage to do it I shall post the pics here. It seems unbelievable that there is not a single free crossover pinny pattern in the whole of the web!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I would run into some funny situation if I asked DH to buy me anything in PVC:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
