Well, the bleach, washing up liquid and boiling water has certainly done the trick. They look great now. Going to put them through the dishwasher now as don't trust my washing up to get rid of all the bleach!!
Thanks for all the tips. Now the gunk is all removed I will regularly soak them in a bicarb solution - guess this is a bit more environmentally friendly.

    :)
  • for a more eco-friendly alternative, half a lemon is pretty good! Squeeze a bit of the juice into the mug, then rub the lemon all around the inside of the mug and leave it overnight. Always worked for me! :D

another tip without any chemicals is to use a wire scourer and it will all come off, wire wool will also work

I know that bleach isn't enviromentaly friendly but I use a dilute mixture to clean my cups. I rest the teaspoons in the mixture too to make them clean and shiny again.

Just to add, if you're not happy using bleach, a variation that I always use is Babys sterilising fluid, just pop a bit in, top up with water and leave for a few minutes, comes up great!

I use the milton sterilising stuff which is a bit moer expensive, but morrissons own is good too. I do use the bleach thing too and this is even cheaper, I put a little in the bottom of the cup/mug fill with boiling water also put teaspoon in just like Jay-Jay, and within a half hour they are brill. I do give them a very good rinse through, but it always works. The bleach that is finished with out of the cup/mug I use to soak the dish cloth in and clean, and give it the obvious good rinse through. I sometimes put water in the sink ready not too much and rinse the cup/mug over this water and then add a tea towel or two to give them an extra clean, great for stains.:)

So you can use the bleach & water from the cup/mug, to clean your dish cloth & your tea towel, all from the one solution.;)

As long as you give the items a good rinse, there is no problems. I have done this for years.:)

I thought that baby sterilising fluid is the same as bleach only under a different name!

I used to clean my tea-stained mugs with Ajax scouring powder

Lol... that's the good thing about a bleach solution, you can use it for other things afterwards, like Pat said. I also do my dishcloths, (are we related?) then I use it on the floor and skirting boards near the back door as it gets very grimy.

By the time you've finished, a little bit of bleach has gone along long way.
Just run, run and keep on running!
