Standard is usually third party only.......ie if your car is nicked or totalled, youll need to pay for it. Very least you need collision damage waiver, loss damage waiver, uninsured motorist protection.

I think that you may be a touch out of date. If you hire a car via any on the UK based car search engines (priced in £££'s, the car will come fully insured - the only extras that you will need being the likes of child seats, SatNav etc.

    good hunting.

p.s. if you book from a US site , in $$$'s, then they are marketed towrads Americans, & American car insurance generally covers car hire

Thanks Murphy, the 3 sites that I've got quotes from are dollar, airlinenetwork and uscarhire. All have the various collision waiver, uninsured driver, various fees and taxes etc etc. Uscarhire give you details for three companies (alamo, dollar and budget). The silver inclusive with Budget is £192 for 2 weeks and covers a second driver, whereas the gold inclusive (£24 more) covers more drivers (which we don't need) and there's no need to return the car with a tank of petrol (is a tank of petrol for an economy/compact car more than £24 in the US?).

    Does this sound ok?

Tank of petrol is approx $3 per gallon, so 12 gallons is $36.

Depends what the refuelling service rate is, I can't find it anywhere.

However in Birmingham UK last week Hertz were charging £2 a litre, or £110 for a tank in a Focus!!

On that basis $6 could be possible so £36 if you return it empty.

I've gone 'gold' but I'm going for the full hobnail boot carbon :D footprint SUV
If it takes a man a week to walk to walk a fortnight how long does it take a fly with tackity boots on to walk through a barrel of treacle?

We've booked to stay in a villa in Orlando (reasonably close to the parks for my teenage children) but I would like to spend 5 days to a week at the beach. We had originally planned to go to St Pete/Clearwater/St Petersburg area but are having a hard time finding a villa or condo thats suitable, close to the beach and within budget.

I don't want to go too far away from Orlando but having trawled google maps, I'm still not sure which is the best area to stay or look around. I have spent a lot of time in the US but this is our first trip to Orlando.

Can anyone suggest areas for me to search?

    Thanks!

I always use tripadvisor, and have never been let down by the recommendations to date. Have a look at the various hotels in the top 20 listed and either book or note them down.

By the way, St Pete is St Petersburg. There's much more to do in Clearwater however.

I always book independantly as these companies take a fair old cut.

I got both flights with car hire (that I'm not using) for £700 incl extra legroom, car hire is £200 (upgraded) and the average decent hotel (like the one you've booked) is only $80-90 per night.

Also, it's best to use the Nationwide Debit Card to get the interbank rate of exchange - currently $2.06 = £1.

with Wal-Mart you can buy online and ask for it to be delivered to a local store, and pick it up from there.
