Hi, Any idea when Visa Debit card will be available on there Basic account. Still showing as cash card only on there website.

If the being able to withdraw cash abroad an incentive to open an account then that can never be taken away. I found this out when my car insurance with royal sun gave free breakdown cover if I took out insurance, although it removed it for new customers they couldn't remove from my renewals because it was an incentive to take the car insurance in the first place. Thats whats more than told me.
It could be argured being able to use your abroad with no fee's was an incentive to open the account. This could have implications regarding charging 1% outside the EU area because one of the selling points of their account was no fee's when making cash withdrawals abroad worldwide.0 -
What about the Cashminder account? That'll stay with a cashpoint card surely?I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0

Rubbish. Unless they guaranteed this feature would be available for ever, it can be taken away at any time. All account conditions can be altered if they give you notice, then it's up to you whether to continue with that account or move somewhere else.0 -

I'm no bank manager, but withdrawing this facility makes total sense to me. Why would Nationwide want your custom if all you're doing is taking advantage of the account? Would you be entirely happy with someone who came into your shop and only ever took the lossleading special offers, and didn't buy anything else? Of course not. They want you off their books because unless you've got other products with them, you're not a worthwhile investment. This is obviously prudent banking, and frankly you should be happy you were lucky/smart enough to take advantage and got away with free / very cheap foreign withdrawals for so long. It's even more amazing that some are almost indirectly blaming Nationwide for its competitors' high foreign withdrawals charges!
What about the Long term customers that arn't able to get the blue visa debit card, is it fair that they are discriminated against and blocked from accessing their own money.
The whole point of the Blue visa debit card was it had a cheque guarantee facility, and fair enough some people don't quailfy for that. But they are discontinuing that now, so there will be no difference between the 2 debit cards, other than 1 works at atms abroad and 1 doesn't.
So basically if your not considered a good customer you can't spend your own money abroad. Oh and you also can't withdraw £100 and the counter either. In fact you better just go somewhere else and leave them with the favourites.0 -

Well no, there are other differences as well like no overdraft and the fact that not everywhere (mainly small places) will except the basic visa card (as will be similar to a solo card).0 -

You couldn't possibly know that yet as they havn't given them out yet. Barclays and LLoyds basic cards work fine @ pay at pump trains etc, its only the natwest and co op one doesn't work.
So having 2 sets of visa debits online and offline, is hardly grounds to bar customers from withdrawing their cash abroad is it?0 -
Hi Everyone,
I have been with the Nationwide since 2001 and I have had the dark purpled colour "cash card". On the back of the card there is the Cirrus logo, Link Logo and of course the Nationwide logo.
I received a letter months ago regarding the cash card plus and I really wanted it, because I find it a real pain paying by over the phone or the internet, for goods/services.
My current card has no debit facilities on account of my bad credit file. I have asked Nationwide repeatly to upgrade and always been refused.
Today, I rang up their number and asked them when they are sending out the new cards, the guy I spoke to said, when your old card expires (which is 11/11). I asked them could they cancel my existing card and issue me with the card plus on account of it being worn and damaged.
He said no problem, he has cancelled my existing card and sending out the new card within the next few days.
The new card is a Visa Debit card. It does not have a cheque guarantee feature and neither can you go overdrawn. You can only spend your balance.
The new feature can be used abroad in shops, which have either chip and pin or signature, YOU WILL BE CHARGED 2.50% of the transaction value.
You will be able to use these cards in cash machines abroad that sport the Visa logo, however YOU WILL BE CHARGED 2.50% of the value.
You will not longer being to use the CIRRUS machines to withdraw money for free.
You will be able to use your card in shops and over phone/net.
The guy on the phone said that a lot of customers who had Flex accounts, only used them once a year to withdraw cash abroad and Nationwides other customers were essentially subsidising this through charges.
I am happy they have changed my "toy card" to a proper card, when I go abroad, I will simply use travellers cheques again.
I dont see the hardship. The change works for me.0 -
I would not be so sure you will be getting the new + card just yet, they clearly state in the letter that was sent any replacement cards will be a cashcard until the automatically issued + card is issued. Would be interested in updates when the new card arrives.0
