Does anyone know if you have a cash card Plus account if NW will upgrade this to a full flex account after a period of satisfactory banking ? Also what are they like for updating transactions ? I know Barclays and Natwest you can see credits due on Monday on the previous saturdays balance

Previously they said 7 months and pay in £750 a month over these months to upgrade the card. I dont know if this is still true.

I opened a Flexaccount with Nationwide Building Soc over 20 years ago. I have had very few problems with it over the years and also opened some esave accounts when that facility became available. So far so good. For those who don't know the Flexaccount current account came with a cheque guarantee card and was also a means of withdrawing cash from an ATM.

On 10th August this year, I received a new card which purported to be a debit card. It instructed me to use this immediately and to use my existing pin number. I tried it in the self service check out in Sainsbury's - card declined. I then tried it a couple more times in ATMs - still no joy and 'card retained'. I carried on using my existing one till that too was swallowed up! Meanwhile I had made several phone calls to Nationwide who informed me variously that I must have the wrong pin number ...NO. That they had requested a new card for me...THEY HADN'T. Then eventually confessed there was a problem with their technical equipment. After a few weeks I got fed up and started to transfer money out of my esave accounts to the Post Office and then Natwest which I opened specifically for this purpose. I continued to complain - 2 months went by and still Nationwide were unable to provide me with a card so I could access MY money!
I continued to complain and demanded compensation - which they gave me - and eventually I resigned myself to closing all my accounts including current account - very inconvenient!

I then received a letter dated the 15th October apoligising for the difficulties I had experienced and promising someone would contact me 5th November with a response. In 3 weeks time!

Sure enough a lady rang me and told me she was very sorry on behalf of Nationwide, listened to me when I told her I was extremely disappointed in Nationwide and what were they going to do about it as I was moving all my money elsewhere. She sympathised but admitted it was a technical problem and there really wasn't anything she could do. So there you have it, one of the biggest building societies in Britain and they really can not produce a card I can use in an ATM - I'm not as bothered about not having a debit card as I can use my credit card. I was, and still am astounded at this admission of failure.

Apologies I know this is a long post but these are the facts.
  • Sorry to bring this to a standstill! I have an update - letter from nice lady at Nationwide arrived on Tuesday again apologising and saying they don't want to lose me as a customer! They told me there would be a small gift arriving. Got home from work yesterday and huge box waiting for mel inside was bouquet of flowers - mainly large chrysanths and a few lilies. Not my favourites - oh well it's the thought that counts. The letter reiterated the fact thay they are unable to produce a card that works as a cash card - and it is still with their technical dept. They are contacting me again by the 3rd December though! :)
  • Hooray - I have a new card I can use in an ATM! Hope it works. 3 months, 2 lots of compensation and a bouquet of flowers later, they have managed to produce a card which arrived yesterday. Just waiting for my new pin then I can actually get some money from a cash machine :)
