"I live abroad; will I be sent a replacement card?
Yes, but please note that you will not be able to use the new cash card+ in cash machines outside the UK."

Note the UK bit so southern is out north is in.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

I also am very dissapointed with this as I only opened the Nationwide account for getting cash out abroad.

I both work and spend much of my leisure time abroad. Therefore I am withdrawing cash every week and the fees from a normal account would add up to stupid amounts (and did before I had the NW a/c).

From the discussion I am unclear as to whether the Visa debit card will enable free ATM withdrawls whilst abroad?

If it does I will try and upgrade. If not I will close the account, with a letter explaining my reasons.

Can anyone tell me if the Visa Debit will be worth me applying for to continue being able to get cash abroad?

    Thx

The expiry date on my cash card is July 2011. Is there anything stopping me from using that instead of the cashcard+ until that date?

the Visa Debit supplied with a Flexaccount is unaffected by this and can freely be used for cash withdrawals and purchases overseas.

there is a 1% fee for usage in non-EEC countries but even so it still kicks the crap out of everything else (except the Santander Zero Current Account)

That's correct. Just as well really as I just opened a joint Flex account with my wife for her day to day use and regular trips to family in France. If they completely removed the foreign transaction benefit from the Flex account there would frankly be very little benefit to having one over other accounts out there - it is a key differentiator and unlike the Santander Zero account does note require you also to have either a mortgage or investment product with the bank.

    On the website it says
I'm currently travelling abroad and will be away until after September 2010 – what do I need to do?
If you don't plan to come back to the UK during the dates the cards are being sent out, please contact us on +44 845 604 6345. Your new card will be sent to your home address. This may prevent you from accessing the cash machine with your existing cash card. If this is the case we can discuss alternative arrangements with you for the time you're abroad.

My guess would be that if you try to use your old card in ATMs abroad after September it won't work.

    Thanks for that Olipro.

No. I recently applied for a second joint Flexaccount with them and, whilst they say they're giving me a Visa debit card, they included a leaflet about the cash+ card in the letter they sent me.

The leaflet basically says that card lets you withdraw cash (except abroad), buy things in shops using chip & pin, get cashback, buy stuff online etc just like a normal debit card....but it will not let you go overdrawn.

I have been folllowing this thread with interest (no pun intended) :D

I got the same letter today (I was expecting it after reading this thread). I cannot understand Nationwide's logic here in banning cash withdrawls overseas for cash card+ holders. If they wan't to stop free cash withdrawls for these customers why not just start charging them(cash card customers) instead of migrating them to this new cash card+ ? At least we could still get our hands on our cash !!

    Also:-

Presumably the new card is Visa debit or Electron, if it's Visa debit can't one use it over the counter at a bank to obtain cash overseas if it won't be accepted at an ATM?

Is it possible to get Cashback with purchase overseas like you can in the UK with a debit card?

I also hold a Nationwide Cashbuilder ATM card. Will this be affected?

    Cheers.
