I call BS on that. Got any facts to back that up?More than 3,300 were picked up in just an eight month period in 2008, compared with only 1,400 in an entire 12-month period in 2006/07.
Critics said the sharp rise pointed to a major weakness with Britain's border controls and warned that hi-tech lorry searches introduced at French ports seven years ago may have been undermined by bureaucracy and money-saving initiatives.
Any illegal immigrant who makes it on to British soil can claim asylum, but those detected before they enter the country -- for example, at the French ports -- can be refused entry.
Between April and November last year, the UK Border Agency's office in Dover alone handled nearly 1,200 illegal immigrants who had been discovered in the UK hiding in lorries.
A further 2,100 were received by other branches of the agency across England, Wales and Scotland.
The rise is believed to coincide with the privatisation of lorry searches carried out in French ports, which used to be conducted by British immigration officials using X-ray machines, heartbeat sensors and carbon dioxide monitors as part of a "juxtaposed controls" deal between the UK, French and Belgian governments. Some searches are now carried out by a private company.
British search teams have also been banned from using X-ray machines in France on health and safety grounds, when French authorities made the bizarre demand that British officials should obtain written permission from stowaways before using the machines to detect them.

Or any cases of claiming benefits..............EU JUDGES ordered that a Somali mum be given a four-bedroom council house in Britain - even though she was an illegal immigrant.
Nimco Hassan Ibrahim, 43, can now live here rent-free and may end up costing taxpayers nearly £500,000.
The landmark decision means Harrow Council in North West London must find her a home in weeks, although many of its tenants wait up to 12 YEARS.
The jobless mum of four lost her right to remain in Britain when her husband left in 2004, but stayed on regardless.
They had moved here in 2003 from Denmark - where he holds citizenship - after earlier marrying in Ethiopia.
After being turned down for a council house she went to the High Court, the Court of Appeal and finally the European Court of Justice.
EU judges backed her claim as her husband is a Danish national and their kids are in school here. They ruled: "A parent caring for the child of a migrant worker who is in education in the host member state has a right of residence."
Her court battle has cost £40,000 in legal fees and £33,000 in housing benefits. She could now carry on getting £20,000-a-year housing hand-outs until her youngest child aged four turns 18 - adding up to £280,000.
Ms Ibrahim gets £1,000 a month in other benefits. Legal aid funded her court fight, taking the total bill to nearly £500,000.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

I didn't need evidence that they exist, I know that!
I was rather looking for statistics that back up your assertion that "Not all immigrants are here illegally, but a very large percentage of them are".
Depends on your definition of a large percentage, but I'd be surprised if that were trueSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
they estimate upto 1 million illegal immigrants here so divide that by however many legal plus illegals there are supposed to be there and you get the %
I don't know what it is but I would guess somewhere between 20-30%Always ask ACAS0 -
In 2005, a study gave a maximum estimate of 570,000 people living illegally in the UK, and the minimum 310,000 according to a Home Office study. The 2001 census showed 4,896,600 foreign-born (ergo legal migrants) and it was estimated in 2005 by the Migration Policy institue that this was 5,487,000.
Given the highest estimate from the study, this suggests that the number of people illegally here in the immigrant population of 9% on the maximum estimate. To me that's not insignificant, but not really a "large" percentage.
And I didn't just guess those figures (Home Office did it for me)

The most we can get is the percentage of illegal immigrants "found" or "caught" within the UK. The Government freely admits, it just "does not know" how many failed asylum seekers remain in the Country, (and this is only the group that have applied for asylum).
Although I HAVE posted the figures that quite clearly you have missed, so I will quote and repeat them with bold for you.More than 3,300 were picked up in just an eight month period in 2008, compared with only 1,400 in an entire 12-month period in 2006/07.

At a wild guess lets say 20% of them get caught before they get in, meaning 80% more than 3,300 slipped through the net just last year alone.
http://cep.lse.ac.uk/briefings/ea_wadsworth.pdfImmigration: The Evidence from Economic Research
• According to the Labour Force Survey, in 2004, 11% of the UK’s working age
population was born abroad, up from around 7% of the population in 1979.
• In 2003, there was a net inflow of 151,000 immigrants to the UK. The UK has
a slightly lower number of immigrants as a proportion of its population than
France or Germany.
• Compared with people born in the UK, the stock of immigrants are younger,
more likely to be either well educated or badly educated, and concentrated in
London.
• Unlike in the United States, where the skill composition of immigrants is
biased towards the unskilled, the skill composition of immigrants to the UK is
roughly similar to that of the resident population.
• Looking at the flow of new immigrants, India is the country that contributes
most (11%) to new arrivals, followed by South Africa (5%), then Poland (5%).
Immigrants are, on average, a little more likely to be unemployed or inactive, though this average varies widely by factors such as years since arrival. In 2004, 79% of working age immigrant men had jobs compared to 83% of working age UK born men. This gap tends to widen in recessions and narrow in economic recoveries.
The higher unemployment rate is explained by the fact that many immigrants are employed in casual and insecure jobs – anyone who is in this sort of job faces much higher risks of subsequent unemployment.
Below shows the country of origin of the top five sender countries in 2004 for the stock of existing immigrants and the flow of new immigrants. Interestingly, the new immigrants are not primarily from the poorest countries, but from developed countries or wealthier emerging countries like South Africa.

Source: Labour Force SurveyAbout 570,000 illegal immigrants live in the UK: Home Office.
June 30, 2005
London, Jun 30 (PTI) An estimated 570,000 illegal immigrants are living in the UK, a new Home Office study indicated Thursday.
It is the first time the government has put a figure on the number of illegal immigrants, though Prime Minister Tony Blair in the past said it was an impossible to hazard a guess.
The Home Office said its best estimate was 430,000 but the number could be between 310,000 and 570,000.
The opposition Conservative party claimed the estimate showed an immigration shamble and the figure should have been released during the election. …Number of illegal immigrants in Britain 'may be nearing 1million'
Last updated at 1:00 AM on 10th March 2009
As many as 947,000 illegal immigrants could be living in Britain, more than double a previous Home Office estimate.
A study by the London School of Economics found evidence of a massive surge in the illegal population since 2001.
Their estimate includes hundreds of thousands of failed asylum seekers, visa overstayers and children born to illegal immigrant parents.
UK migrant total is 'three times the world average'
The LSE study was commissioned by Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London. Mr Johnson has used the findings to argue in favour of an amnesty for illegal immigrants. He said it would be 'morally right' for those who have been in Britain for several years to be allowed to live here legally, so that they contributed to tax revenues.
Both the Government and the Conservatives strongly oppose such a move, claiming it would make Britain even more attractive for illegal migrants.

As for figures of Legal Immigrants............The Government has recently revised its long-term forecasts for annual net immigration upwards by one third to 190,000.
Data buried deep in the official figures revealed that over the next five years immigration is projected to run at close to a quarter of a million before reducing.
In the current financial year, officials expect net migration - the difference between those arriving and leaving - to be 240,000.
Next year, projected net immigration is 230,000 - and this figure does not fall to the long-term ''assumption" of 190,000 a year until 2012.
Officials said the higher immigration figures over the next five year took account of the huge influx of workers from eastern Europe.
The new figures sent shockwaves around Whitehall where planning for housing, education, health care and transport will all have to be revisited.
Recently, the Home Office admitted that the impact of high immigration was ''unsettling" the country and bringing new pressures on schools, hospitals and trains.
Guy Goodwin, director of demography at the ONS, said the country faced a combination of high immigration, rising fertility and better life expectancy that was "unique" in the country’s history.
He said the figures represented ''a major demographic shift’’ with huge implications for public policy.
The Tories accused ministers of losing control over the borders - and demanded a ceiling on new arrivals.
David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said: “The shocking acceleration in the rate of population growth makes it more urgent than ever that the Government should introduce a properly controlled immigration system. “Without controls on the numbers coming here, we will face a future of public services struggling to cope.’’ He added: “Tough talk from ministers is not enough. They should take action to put controls on numbers coming to the UK, which Conservatives have been demanding for over a year.”
In 2004, the Government forecast that net immigration would be running at 145,000 a year, but as recently as 15 years ago, ministers were working on the basis of zero net immigration.
Population projections issued then were 10 million lower than those just published.
Liam Byrne, the Immigration minister, conceded there had to be “swift and sweeping changes” to the immigration system. He said a points-based system for work permits would help contain the growth.
But it is just four years since David Blunkett, then Home Secretary, said there was ''no obvious limit’’ to immigration.
Immigration from outside the EU is also set to grow after the European Commission announced it was introducing a “blue card” system aimed at recruiting up to 20 million African and Asian immigrants.
Although Britain is opting out of the system, once workers are in Europe for five years they will be free to move around the EU.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Thats a bit of a daft question, as quite obviously if you are illegal in anything, your hardly going to wear a t-shirt announcing it.
The most we can get is the percentage of illegal immigrants "found" or "caught" within the UK. The Government freely admits, it just "does not know" how many failed asylum seekers remain in the Country, (and this is only the group that have applied for asylum).
Although I HAVE posted the figures that quite clearly you have missed, so I will quote and repeat them with bold for you.
So to do the Maths a total of 3,300 illegal immigrants that were caught just trying to enter the UK last year alone.
At a wild guess lets say 20% of them get caught before they get in, meaning 80% more than 3,300 slipped through the net just last year alone.
http://cep.lse.ac.uk/briefings/ea_wadsworth.pdf However I must point out these figures of LEGAL immigrants are about 5 years old. So to match the dates of figures for illegal immigrants at that period.........
Skip forward to the present date............ Of course such figures could only ever be estimates, being that they are breaking a law, they are not likely to stick up there hand in a crowd to be counted.
As for figures of Legal Immigrants............And I didnt just guess those figures either, nor called them BS without researching them first, I am no mathematician, but to me 947,000 isa greater percentage of illegal immigrants than the 250.000 of legal, but regardless, its still more than this little country can handle, there is just no more room at the Inn, for either.

Damn, my post I made this morning didn't go through. I shall try and repeat from memory:
The 950,000 vs. 250,000 was comparing total number versus one year, but at least we are reading from the same figures now. I agree that 950,000 people in the country who should not be here is a crazy amount; but it is difficult to find people who are under the radar.
What irks me is the huge number of myths that often get peddled out on the topic of immigration. There's a whole lot of "My mate down the pub says.." which are heard so often that they are accepted as true by a lot of people. There are quite a few people who aren't even aware of a difference between economic immigrants and asylum seekers - and yet still tell people they know all about 'them forrins'.
Also, dfh seems really paranoid about foreigners. Bad experience on holiday?Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
