sole plate of iron (cleaning)

I don't use my iron much, so my suggestion may be silly - feel free to ignore if it is!
My first instinct would be to turn it onto a medium heat and iron some cotton or linen rags such as old towels or bed sheets. The heat should melt the imprint and using natural fabric like cotton means you can't melt it accidentally and make the problem worse. Not sure if the fabric should be dry or damp. I'd probably start with dry and dampen if it seemed necessary.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
Hi, I use one of those cheap magic eraser blocks from the pound shops. Works brilliantly with no damage to the plate and you can re-use it for other cleaning projects! Hope that helps
P.S. I would put the iron on a low setting to heat up then turn it off before you start to clean otherwise you may melt the block!0 -
Hi all
Was hoping someone may have a good OS way of cleaning burnt build up off an iron? I've tried some products for this unsuccessfully and am always scared to clean it when it's on!
Any suggestions gratefully received, thank you!0 -
Depends whether the sole-plate has some non-stick coating on it or not.
In the first instance I'd heat the iron up to maximum and give a sheet of brown-paper/newspaper a good going over. If that doesn't do the trick turn it off, wait for it to cool slightly and scrub it with a scourer. A plastic-scourer would only work if the iron is just slightly warm so you don't melt it.0 -

I'll add this thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

Even though my iron is only about a year old the plate is black and keeps coming off on our clothes.
I have descaled it as we live in a very hard water area and have tried cleaning the plate itself with equal quantities of water and white vinegar but it has made no difference.
Any ideas anyone?
Many thanks

Buy a new one.
You can get irons cheap these days but this time, don't let the temperature get too hot. The black you see is melted cloth fibres.0 -
I get my iron very hot, turn the steam right up and give it a good rub on the ironing board to remove any residue."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.0
