Brillo pad or scrunched up tin foil once the iron is warm usually does the trick.0

Anything slightly abrasive will work but best on warm/hot iron and not too abrasive - you want to get the plasticky muck off not scar the sole plate."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0

Hi polesalot,
This thread should help: sole plate of iron (cleaning)
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

I used one of those plastic scourers - they look like a cross between your bath scrunchie and a kitchen metal scourer thing and it worked - obviously when it had cooled down or I would've made it loads worse!! Good luck x0

Had this problem many times, heat up the iron, get a damp tissue and rub, takes about 20 seconds and tissue gets HOT so keep rotating it.

I have a Tefal and always find them bad for getting messy. It broke down, still under guarantee so I contacted Tefal and they picked it up and retuned it within the week. When I got it back they'd fixed it but also replaced the soleplate! That solved my problem of cleaning it.0

Thanks everyone. Loads of good tips! I tried the damp cloth, then the salt (v messy but quite effective) and finally the scrunched up tinfoil which got rid of the last stubborn bits.
Just off to hoover the salt from the ironing board......It's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :jHappiness is not a destination - it's a journey0 -
Hi,
I figured since this maybe 'old school' savings this mite be the best place to post!
I have stains on my iron prob after oh burning something! Does anyone know how to get it off the steel plate? I have read a candle, vinegar or a brillo pad but not sure if there a good idea.
Any help appreciated.0 -
Hot Iron Cleaner from Lakeland is pretty good, although it STINKS while you're using it. I'm not sure about the others you mention as they didn't work for me!They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0
