Over time black/brown deposits have built on the hot plate of my electric steam iron. I've tried various commercial cleaners but none seem to have any effect.

I'm reluctant to scrape or use mechanical means to remove the deposits in case of damaging the hot plate surface.

Does anyone have any tried and tested suggestions for cleaning the iron?

Iron soleplate cleaner. You get it in John Lewis, Robert Dyas etc.

I have exactly the same problem, just bought some of the stuff that Owain suggested from Ebay.

    Hi Alfrescodave,

We have an earlier thread with more ideas that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

I've burnt OH shirt and its ruined my good iron. Dont want to dump it but I've tried all the usual tips- vinegar, lemon juice, baking powder, toothpast and elbow grease but its not shifted. I dont mind buying a proprietry cleaner if its works, but which one? Or is there a really good household tip?

Have you tried scrapping it off with a knife?

To be honest , i wouldn't even bother trying. You can but a brand new spanking tatco value iron for around £3.99. Probabaly cheaper than an expensive cleaner, and perfactly serciveable, ( although i'm not a fan of tatco, so that's saying something ). I never understand the need for complex, expensive irons. Besides. Nothing needs ironing these days, anyway.

This stuff from lakeland works a treat. It is good on the glass windows in wood burning stoves too.
